2900 or 3850???

3850, the 2900 series runs hot and uses a lot more power. I'd agree to look for one with 512mb of vram as well.
 
If you can find a 2900pro for the original $160 (512bit bus) that newegg was selling it at, go with that. It will eat a 3870, when properly oc'd. If you can't, I'd go with the 3850. Don't get the 256-bit variant. (Only has one power connector, crippled card)

Got something to back that up? A 3870 is faster then the 2900XT, so how can a 2900Pro "eat" a 3870?
 
i dunno check this out, according to this in 3DMark06 a single 2900XT completely pwns 3850. But a 3850 in crossfire owns the 2900(which is expected). Linky.
 
we should abandon 3d mark as an accurate metric of video card performance. remember, 2900xt's at launch posted better 3d mark numbers than an 8800gtx. that being said, a stock clocked xt vs an overclocked 3850 512 is pretty even, but there will always be a few games where the potential of the xt's 512 bit memory bus flexes its muscle. those running heavily overclocked xt's reap the benefits of this feature. the drawback is that greater than stock xt's clocks compound the power leakage problems inherent in the early iterations or the r600 gpu.
