My friend's BFG 285 is dying a slow death (e.g. frequent white screens, occasional driver stop working error). What would you recommend as a replacement.

He would like to keep it an nVidia product to minimize driver issues.

My line of thinking is a 460 or 470.

If he is willing to pay the price of a GTX 470, why not buy a GTX 560Ti? According to the Anandtech bench, the outperforms it by a small margin.
 
The 460 1gb is roughly a replacement, but it won't be an upgrade really.

I feel the 560 is a better choice over the 470, going by current Newegg prices, unless you are getting different prices of course.
 
I agree about the 560 (although he was hoping for around $200). I did not examine pricing on the 560 until after the OP. He does foresee a new build in Q1 of 2012, so a 560 could be carried over and expect to do well.
