280 stepup--285 or 295?`

Hi all-- Ok so let me start off by saying i paid wayyyyy to much for my 280-- i know-- i get it lolol.. I got it @ frys and forgot to send in the MIR--- dooohhhhh... So instead of my net price being 399(which i know was still high) == i ended up paying 450.. lol... I dont think anyone has payed more.. :p

Ok so my stepup allowance is 450$.... Do i get the 285(higher clocks-- less power-- cooler temps- no cost) or do i get the 295(uber card- 50$ to step up to that).....They both have their pluses and minuses... I like the 295 cause its silly how powerful it is.. But with the history of dual cards and support from nv-- IM not sure i want to go that way... Plus the concern of micro stutter... But-- nice to have a monster card for only $50 more..

On the other hand-- the 285 seems to be strong... People are liking them and i havnt read any flop reports of it.. It would be a free step up so that is good..

My res is 3840x1024-- i use a triplehead2go... Though my current 280 is working fine.. So Im sure the 285 will just be fine too.. I mostly just race online(rfactor, Iracing) so those sims dont really hammer the card to bad... Which to get?
 
Hmm tough situation. I went with the 285 myself, but the cost for step up to the 295 was $250 not $50. I think you would get the most value out of your situation if you got the 295.

I did some basic math on if you got the 295 and sold it to buy a 285, but it probably wouldn't save you much considering the hassel. I would just get the 295 and maybe then you'll be able to utilize your 1200w PSU beyond 50%.
 
I just went to a 295 from a 280 =) look at it in another way, will the 295 be worth more then the 285 when you want to sell it later on? and sure the 285 is fast currently, but will it stil be fast in future games?
 
I'd get the 285 myself, but I'm very wary of dual gpu solutions. Its really up to you though. Both will last a while.
 
Another way to look at it.
A) $450 is a rippoff for a GTX280
B) $450+SH is a rippoff for a GTX285
C) $500+SH is about right for a GTX295

Get your money's worth. If you end up not likely the dual card solution you can probably sell it pretty easily.

I have a feeling this "situation" hes talking about actually effects...everyone!..you know...not just consumers...corporations are ripping everyone off! They arent feeling this "situation" and trying to keep their business!
 
Well though i can appreciate the idea of profit-- ummm-- im a lazy sack and probably wont go through the hassle to get the 295, sell it, then go get a 285 and maybe pocket 40 or 50 bucks... Though i do appreciate that 40-50bucks matters esp when someone is a student or even just a regular guy in todays current economic situation... But With that said-- it wont happen.. lol :p

As for what i paid for the card--- lol--- I know, i was hitting my head against the wall when i found the mir and realized the deadline was missed by a few days.. lol ... At the time 280s were going for around 375-- so my thought was "ok, im in frys and i can get this now for 399 after mir-- or go home and newegg it and deal with shipping and ups bla bla bal--- ok screw it-- im in for it now ).....Now flash to the day when i realized i forgot to send in the paperwork and just ended up paying 450 for a 280.. :rolleyes:


So back to the orginal post.. Seems like guys are split on here .. .That is just how i feel too.. Part of me likes geting the uber card... But part of me is also very wary of dual gpu solutions.. Plus if you look at the history of dual cards-- it seems like they come and go very fast.. 7950x2 9800x2 and im sure there are more in there... It seem like NV pumps them out when they need to get the crown back then ditches them like a hot potato..
 
If you are happy, dont stepup and waste money on either card from either side. Wait for next gen(late 2009) that gonna be a real stepup or worth the money.
Just do some light OC of the 280 and get some 285-performance "for free" until the card is not powerfull enought for you.
 
FYI, evga doesnt count a rebate against you when using stepup. They only go by the price you paid on the invoice. The rebate is just a freebee.
 
Damn. My step-up period ended yesterday and I forget to get the 285 or 295. I paid 440 for my 280 so if they took the invoice price it would have no cost me much for the 295 :(. Oh well.
 
I'd get the 285 personally just because I too am wary of dual card and SLI options. First of all I think it's overkill, and it's not actually 2X the performance, you got more to worry about, more power hungry, runs hotter, possibility of even more issues with certain games than single card solutions, etc etc. I love my 285 GTX it ownz, and I went from a GTX 260 Superclocked to this and definitely noticed an increase and it was well worth it. I am now trying to decide if it'd be worth dumping this e6600 CPU and getting a Q6600 for $189 or going all out and maxing out what my board will do with a Q9650 for $333 because I know I'm CPU limited right now.
 
I'm #157 in line for a 295 :/ going slow so far, only moved up 5 most likely due to other people canceling
 
go with the 295. remember its essentially gtx 265 in sli. hell, 192sp gtx 260 sli is nothing to scoff at on a 19x12 lcd. the prevoius gx2 card was build on much inferior silicon (g92 with the pathetic 256bit memory bus) so the two really shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. no op, you only think you overpaid on your gtx 280. i bought two of them at launch. you're not losing anything by stepping up to a much faster card.
 
I jumped from #100 to #25 in the last day - I guess now they have enough GTX 295s in stock.
 
Hmm tough situation, but if your looking for the most eyecandy then the 295 would be your best bet.
 
Love my 295, it's my first SLI experience, take a bit to get used to at first but everything is good now. Now maybe one day I'll try quad SLI. Those 30 inch monitors sure like powerfull cards =)
 
I'm in the same boat.

I have two BFG 280s that I got for 350 after rebate.

I think I can get the 285s for about zero except for shipping.
Unfortunately, the BFG store hasn't posted the 285s yet and that's where I have to "buy" the new cards.

I had a couple 4870 X2s and I never felt ATI got the full power out of the 2 GPUs.....so I am very leary of buying the 295.

Look at it this way......nothing is coming to step up to in the near future.....we have the 285 and the 295 to choose from for little or no money......no matter what you do you can't loose.:D

I'm going with the 285s due to the lower power consumption and less heat.
 
This 295 is my second multi-GPU card. I tried a 4870x2 last year but the unstable drivers and sqealing fan were too much of a hassle. So far, the 295 is doing great. I really wanted the 285 SSC, but eVGA only offers the base version for the step-up program.

Eventhough bfgstore does not have gtx285 or gtx295 yet, they still have those cards listed has trade up options. I'm still debating if I should trade up my gtx260oc now that I got a gtx280 oc2 new for less than what I paid for the 260 back in december. The problem is it cost more to step up to a gtx280 than gtx285, and I can't sli a 285 with a 280...

right now the trade up list price at bfg is

What's the rest of your system like? I would recommend returning or selling your GTX 280 OC2 and trading up to a GTX 295. Or, if you have an SLI compatible motherboard, trade-up both the GTX 260 and GTX 280 OC2 for two GTX 285's.

Big ups for BFG. eVGA only offers the base version of their cards for their step up program.

I know I know....why a crossfire board and then get nvidia cards, but the price I paid were pretty low for the gtx260 new, and then the gtx280 came along at a price I can't resist....
so I ended up with a gtx 260 and gtx 280, god knows I only intended to get a 4870/512mb when I started to assemble this rig.

Since I got both cards at good prices, it actually cost me more to step up...like $130~+shipping to step up from gtx260 to the gtx285 oc..lol. my other options are to build a
2nd sff rig with one of the cards, sell 1 of them, or wait and see if prices drop....after all I still have 59 days on the gtx260 step up and 83 days on the gtx280 step up.

Since you don't have an SLI compatible board, I'd trade-up to a GTX 295 through the GTX 280 OC2 (less out of pocket) and then sell your GTX 260 on the forums. That'd be the best bang for your buck and leave you with the most money. That's only what I would do though.
 
You know eVGA is prepping a voltage mod utility for the GTX cards (minus the GTX285 right now), so you'll be able to oc the 295 and up the voltage to get more stable overclocks. That alone makes me feel better about stepping-up to the 'vanilla' GTX 295.
