Hey guys.

I'm in the market for a semi cheap 27" IPS. I've been considering these, what do you guys think? Altho these are mostly 1080p monitors...

Dell S2740L - $289 on sale ($309)
Philips 273P3QPYEB - $239
BenQ GW2750HM - $199 on sale ($269)

I thought about those Korean panels, but I just don't trust that yet... warranty, pixel, doa. seems too much of a hassle.

I was also looking for a decent 27" IPS for a good price, but didn't want to go with a Korean either due to warranty and you don't know how long they will last.
So I went for a S2740L and I'm getting it later today. 1080p is a completely fine resolution for me,(personal preference). I'm coming from a 1080p 21.5" TN panel, so hopefully the pixel density isn't too bad on 27".
I'll post my first impressions on it later..

I had a 27" 1080P monitor (mine was a 144hz TN), and to be completely honest, from the 2.5 ft away that I sat the pixel density wasn't an issue at all. The only time I see it being an issue is if you sit extremely close. In fact, if it was an IPS, I probably would have kept it.

Enjoy your new panel!!

1080p is just too low resolution for a 27 inch. At least consider a 27 inch 2560x1440 panel at 60 hertz then...

Either that or a 2560x1440 24 inch monitor with 120hz capability.. If that exists.

So I've played around a little bit with S2740L and I was expecting a lot worse regarding the resolution. 1080p is completely fine and I can absolutely not see the pixels unless I get under 2 feet or so.

Yep!

I used to game with a 37" LG on my desk. Even then it wasn't too bad one you started playing games. EPIC picture. LOL

How's the input lag and response time on that Dell you picked up?

I am very impressed by the performance of this monitor. Zero input lag and I do not notice any ghosting, but I am aware that it uses a pretty heavy overdrive (which can't be adjusted), which causes some overshoot. NCX demonstrates it in his review, but myself I haven't noticed it yet.

On a side note, coming from a TN panel, I am amazed by the quality. The only issue I have is that the IPS glow can be quite noticable at the bottom. But after I put it on my amplifier (about 10cm higher) it is much better. If it only had height adjustment.....

Acer s275HL is another 27" using I assume the same 1080p IPS panel as the others.

the acer's basically the same as the other slim 'bezelless' 27" 1080p ips screens, except that it's glossy.

it has a lot of rtc overshoot like the dell, but the overdrive can be disabled in the service menu. however, it's only temporary as it becomes re-enabled after a power cycle or signal loss/change.

The Dell S2740l is also glossy, although I imagine quite a bit more than the acer on account of the glass front. On the flip side the LCD is better protected I suppose.

One thing i was afraid about on the S2740L was the glass, how bad is it? Granted all my monitors have ever been matte
Hows ghosting/lag?

I should of specified this won't be my main screen, I'm adding it for the extra real-estate to go along with my 3 24"s

It is VERY reflective, so beware if you have a window behind you or any kind of light. I don't have a window or light source behind me so I'm not bothered at all. Although when my room is completely dark, and I have both bright colors and black colors I can see some reflection because the bright colors bounces of my face back to the reflective surface.
As I said earlier; as far as input lag and ghosting/ overshoot goes = it is very responsive... no input lag whatsever, but it does suffer from some overshoot, but I haven't noticed anything yet in Battlefield 3..

You can add into your list the AOC i2757fh and Viewsonic VX2770. Both also very good IPS 1080p monitors. The AOC got a very good review off TFT central including an excellent thumbs up for gaming. Plus it looks very nice, thin and comes with a small AG coating, nothing as bad as Dell. So if you have it near a window, might be the way to go.

They both use the same panel as S2740L, and it certainly is a very good panel. I'm liking it more and more. Compared to my 4 year old Benq E2200 monitor (TN), you just can't compare the colors, at all.

Should have mentioned, the biggest difference between all these monitors is going to be aesthetic's and warranty. All of them should perform similar, the Dell has the best warranty, but is also the most expensive (not by a lot though). It's a tough choice...

Actually, the S series only carries a 1 year warranty by Dell :(. If it was the 3 year like on the Ultrasharps... it wouldn't be that terrible.

That's interesting. Over here in Australia, the S2740L gets the full 3 year next day onsite exchange warranty. A very large plus for the Dell... The Viewsonic and AOC can't really compete with that, but are a bit cheaper to compensate.

yeah its weird

1 year Limited Hardware Warranty2 (USA & Latin America)
3 years Limited Hardware Warranty2 (Regions outside of USA & Latin America)

Well if anyone was wondering what I ended up choosing, I couldn't find anything I liked in the 27" size for a reasonable price.
I ended up buying 2 more u2312hm @ $160 each + tax from dell.
