I've been going through a couple of displays the last months and I'm at the end of the road, it seems like I just can't find anything decent.

The use cases are;
* Development work
* Light gaming (Diablo 3, Dota 2), so ghosting won't matter that much (unless it's insane).
* Photography work, I will profile the monitor (i1 Display Pro), hardware calibration is nice but I don't think there's a viable path there right now. Close to AdobeRGB is a requirement.

I do require a USB-hub in the monitor, I just like to organize the cable madness that way.

Tested monitors;
* Eizo EV2736 (I wanted to try a SRGB monitor). I had 2 exchanges for a total of 3 displays, they all suffered from massive backlight bleed and uniformity issues.
Awesome coating, best of the monitors I've tested.
* NEC Spectraview 272. Expensive as hell in Europe, HORRIBLE IPS glow, much more severe than anything I've seen (compared to other IPS screens). Some uniformity issues.
Loved the industrial design, I was looking into getting the non-spectraview version but it's still very expensive and I assume the glow will be just as bad.
* Asus PA279. Around 10 dead pixels, very weird halo effects in OSX, screen looked like it was on insane contrast and sharpness (even though the controls said otherwise).

Are there any alternatives?
 
Both the PB278Q and 2713HM are sRGB models though. I would prefer the wider gamut for photography related tasks, it makes it a lot easier when doing prints.
 
I would give the PA279Q one more chance. I've had mine for 2 months now and I don't have any of the issues you experienced. I share it between my PC and MacBook Pro. Never experienced those halo effects you described on Mavericks. 10 dead pixels out of the box? You got a bad one. Give it another chance.

Using 100% brightness in the dark? If so you will find that most monitors have horrible blacks, especially the GBR-LED backlit, wide gamut models which glow more than the standard gamut models.

The Asus PA279Q suffers from the same, very obvious overshoot ghosting (refer to =DEAD= & PRAD's reviews for info, use Google or Chrome to translate) as the Dell U2713H & 3014 which even shows up when scrolling text and moving windows slowly which might explain the halos you saw. The PA242W's tested had poor black levels so it wouldn't surprise me if the PA272W is similar. The Dell 3014's game mode uses the displays native gamut=over-saturated & inaccurate colors in games and it has locked color controls and poor preset colors anyways. The Dell xx14 models & Asus PA279Q are only decent when calibrated and used in color manged programs.

You have exhausted all of the decent wide gamut alternatives (PA272W) except for the Viewsonic VP2772:

I usually go for 120cd, so usually more around 30% brightness rather than 100 :)

The PA272W just dropped a bit in price here in Sweden, might give it another chance, I need a new monitor, otherwise I would've just waited for the next generation :/

Between the 2772 and the 272 I think I'd pay the premium and get hardware calibration.
