Ok I just got my new monitor, it has built in speakers, the catch is, the speakers will only work with the VGA setting and not HDMI. People say the picture quality on HDMI is leaps and bounds better, but really i have been stareing at the screen back and fourth through VGA and HDMI, I can not see the difference for the life of me. How big of a difference am I supposed to be seeing?

With VGA you are converting digital to analog and then converting back to digital again. It is always better to use digital all the way through the chain if you can.

A 27" monitor with a max res of 1920x1080 with built-in speakers that don't work with HDMI sounds, no offense, really low quality. I'm guessing that's why you don't see a difference.

+1. I can easily see VGA picture is rather fuzzy compared to HDMI one, even on a 24" monitor. If you can't tell the difference, you've got bigger issues (bad screen or maybe poor eyesight).

It also sounds like the speakers are disabling whatever audio cable / port you have connected when you use HDMI because they are trying to capture the audio via the HDMI connection but its having trouble or not receiving the audio signal from your graphics card.

well its speakers on the monitor, i dont think i have ever seen a monitor with good speakers anyhow. I just wanted them to work, for some reason i cant get them to work. Because its HDMI and there is the input for sound as well (green cable)

maybe I have bad eye, or dont know the differnece in quality with monitors. Its a pretty sick monitor i would say, colors are sharp, I love it.

But really I dont see a differnce at all. Its an ASUS 27" LED w/speakers. the speakers are not a big deal, but its just cool to have them running.

Like right now reading this message board switching back and fourth, nothing looks blurry at all, text is perfectly clear, colors look the exact same... Maybe I have really good eyes, or you guys have really shitty eyes lol? I dont get it, i realize ones digital and ones analog.

But I even tried gaming awhile ago while switching back and fourth, they look identical, i even got my roomate to look as well, he cant tell the difference....

Maybe under differnt calibrations it will be noticeable, but this is just straight out of the box settings (as I just bought it, and I am happy with the settings so I may just leave them that way)

I will fiddle around with the sound settings to see if I can get it to work through the HDMI... I know it should....

Or he happens to have good quality VGA ports on both the source and the monitor. Good quality VGA can approach the visual quality of digital (DVI, HDMI, Displayport). The big advantage of digital over VGA is that it's always perfect quality. You have probably only ever seen poor quality VGA hardware - there's certainly a lot of that out there.

yep technically its the same information being passed but its like audio you never want to convert back and forth between formats because each time you do there's a chance for something to be lost in translation along the way.

This. What videocard are you using (like model, not just the gpu)?
Are you using a straight up HDMI cable to plug into the video card to the monitor?
Are you using an adapter?
--If adapter, Are you using an AMD / ATI card?
----If yes, are you using the adapter that came with the card? (i.e. official AMD / ATI dvi->hdmi)
Are you using a nVidia card?
--If yes, is it hooked up to the internal s/pdif port?
--If no, I'm at a loss, maybe it's driver related. Or maybe you haven't configured the HDMI as your main device for sound. Go to the devices and hardware and configure it.
