260gtx to 4890 switch?

hey guys there are some good deals on the 4890s right now and i am wondering if its worth the switch as far as speed goes. i wanted to SLI my 260 but seeing how the 4890s are around the same price if not less i would rather sell my 260 and crossfire the 4890 cards.

has crossfire come along pretty well or not so much? i have an i7, will crossfire cards scale as good as the SLI setup? i been hearing negative things about crossfire such as drivers and etc

i would like to go back to ATI, last card i owned was an 850xt and from there on i had all nvidia cards and never really felt satisfied with nvidia, bought em mainly for warranty but now XFX has lifetime so its good news


any suggestions are welcome, thanks
 
It would be a really nice upgrade for you. Crossfire will scale quite nicely, but personally I would just get 1 4890 and enjoy it for a while until the next gen cards come out (or if your content just hang on to your 260)

The 4890 is a nice card, but it is still a 4870 at its heart. The next generation of cards wont be out for a bit, but I am betting they will bring a lot more to the table then your 260 to 4890 switch.

Or you can buy my 4870 X2 for slightly more than the price of an XFX 4890 ;)
 
Well, I got a great deal on a 4890 and upgraded to it from a 4870 (which in most cases was faster than a GTX260). It depends on resolution, at 1680x1050, I can't tell the difference between the two in most games. Only game that runs WAY WAY noticeably better are the Crysis games. I'm running both at their highest settings with the 4890, when I couldn't with the 4870. I'd guess that is more or less attributed to the 1GB of ram on the 4890 compared to the 512mb on the 4870. If you find a good deal on a 4890 (I got mine for $199.99, BUT I've seen em on sale today for $165, check out spoofee.com or techbargains.com) and can sell the GTX260 for about $120, I'd recommend the upgrade.
 
yeah thats where i saw the good deal.

looks like i got some thinking to do, i dont really care for the new cars that will be coming out, with todays economy computer components are likely to be pushed back even further. and even then prices on new tech will be high, i wont be making a mistake such as when i bought my 8800GTS for 440$.....
 
I don't think upgrading to a 4890 is a good idea, you will at most get few fps more compare to what you already have. With all the trouble buying and selling I don't think it's worth it. Go for the next stop 4850x2 or get another 260 to see real improvement.

afaik cf is getting better, but still behind SLI. And from experience Ati is not the best company to work with software wise.

just because nVidia put their TWIMTBP on most of the game does not mean ATI does not scale well. JUST Because there is no ATI tag on it does not mean its not ATI flavor game, such as CoD4, Grid, Fallout 3, STALKER CS, Demigod.....etc

such as Crysis, it was heard as nVidia base game, but they both actually work pretty damn well, especially 4890 outperform GTX 285 in some cases...

and no, CF is not behind SLI in any case, CF actually scale better than SLI...

I am not a fan either way, in fact I am getting ready to switch from my X2 to a 285, but Crossfire is definitely better than SLI hands down. Personally I dislike both at this point and will be downgrading to a single GPU solution.

I agree with him. Seems like extra work for what is mostly a sideways step or at best a tiny step forward.

And as someone that went from Nvidia to ATI. I have to say, I really miss having my tweakable game profiles. ATI Tray Tool sorta does it, but it crashes a lot on Win 7 x64 for me.

Don't recommend HD 4850 x2. [H] reviewed it and HD 4850x2 comes nowhere close to 4870x2, it even has trouble rivaling GTX 280. Frankly its a big POS and a scam.

Hahaha...Anandtech? Well sure in benchmarks we can always have card x beat y by z % but in the end its always a benchmark. IMHO I've owned gtx 280SC, HD 4890 and HD 4870x2 and my gameplay fps fall in line with what [H] reported and reports for those cards so I have no reason to distrust [H] numbers on HD 4850x2.

Also, c'mon I hope you see something wrong with the following numbers

At 2560x1600 HD 4870 512MB CF beats out HD 4870x2 in warhead.... Are you seriosly going to believe their results and use them in an argument?

no, i dont care what 1 particular graph out of maybe 50 says about some other cards that are not the ones i am typing about. so even tho you have not owned a 4850x2 you are qualified to make blanket statements about it, apparently.
 
2x HD 4890 will be faster than 2x GTX 260 and since you said that they will cost the same, I don't see why you should choose the slower setup.
 
uh the deal on ewiz didnt last so long, what a shame because i was going to order those cards....now the 4890s are in the 240 range which is not as desirable right now
