Hi All,

I've built my new rig and am still dialing in some settings. I'm using Real Temp to monitor CPU temps for my 2600K and at idle the cores run about 30C and under most heavy loads it runs about 55C.

However, I was playing Rift last night and noticed that the top temperatue logged was 80C. That seems high to me and seems to be a bit of an abnormal spike. I'm using a stock cooler for the CPU and have since ordered a 212+ but I don't know how much that will help this 'peak' heat spike.

Any thoughts?

Also, I'm curious as to why my BIOS will tell me the chip is running at 60C idle while Real Temp says it is 30C idle. I've read this is not unusual to get a bad reading from BIOS, but I'm still curious :)

Hi..I have a 2600k and im using the corsair h70 to cool it....Ya the stock ksf from intel sux....get an aftermarket cooler, some good tim like as5 or whatever u like, and u should see better temps....at stock, I idle around 27-34c depending on ambient house temp, but it usually doesn't get above 58c with stress testing...

the reason why u see the different temps is becuase in the bios, you cpu is running at it's 3.4ghz speed and when in windows with speedstep enabled, u should be hovering around 1.6 ghz or relative to that....hope that helps

Using a Corsair H50+MX2 here. My max temp so far has been 68c @ 4.635 GhZ and hyperthreading on. I idle at 29c.

According to some random documentation somewhere 72c is supposed to be the recommended temperature limit, going no higher than 1.38v. I've seen a lot of people pushing 4.8-5.2 GhZ around 1.39-1.5v and hitting temps in the low-mid 80c range.

72.6°C is the TCase temperature rating but that has nothing to do with the core temperature which most software reports.

Core temperatures and TCase temperatures are measured at two different spots on the CPU and are not comparable. As long as your CPU is not thermal throttling it is operating within the Intel design spec. Thermal throttling doesn't happen until a core temperature of approximately 98C to 100C on most of these CPUs.

Mine does this too. It's a graphic BIOS (ASUS WS Revolution).

I don't know why they have to max the cpu during BIOS lookups. It seems lame, and a waste of power for people who spend hours in BIOS.

That extra money I spend on the wasted BIOS power could be used to purchase a delicious submarine sandwich or some other good food.

Dude, it's a bios. You can't expect it to function like a full blown OS with all bells and whistles. Try coding some stuff in realmode 16bit space and see if you can do it better, i.e. implement high functions like ACPI and speedstep. Try at least once and you forget all about your dumb sandwich.

BIOS isn't idle. There is a processing load on the CPU. It's been estimated to be around 30%. BIOS is also not reading coretemps directly, either.

I've been monitoring my cpu temps for awhile now and all four cores will get into the mid-60s playing Rift. My friend has the same mobo, same card, different case and playing the same game his cpu gets into the upper 40s. Also, prime95 gets to 85C quickly and I have to shut the test down.

So I'm definitely trashing the stock cooler and going with a 212+. Hopefully that does the trick.

Given my limited experience, I am not at all surprised about at least 80C readings showing up given any significant OC-level when your machine is under stress with only stock cooling. My experience is similar to yours given substantial stress and stock cooling at OC levels above, say, 4500 or 4600 MHz.

A70 here too. Running about 2 deg higher than you, but I only have the left fan installed ( ram slot interference).

The stock intel was awful. Idled at 62c !

hyper 212+ will definately make a difference, i was suprised how well this cooler performs for the price. my cores never exceed 60C and thats with stress testing, BC2 which is probably the most powerful game i run right now never pushes any of the four cores beyond 50C. also worth mentioning that i have the 212+ in a push/pull config w/ another 120mm fan.

I think that 80 is way too high. I would start with resetting the cooler. I max at 54 gaming... 68 under prime at 4.8 1.36 volts. I see u r on stock cooler and stock speed? I think you should make sure bios did not over volt CPU....
