it sits at 23~25C @ 3.4ghz (stock), 33~35C @ 4.6ghz, 39~41C @ 4.8ghz and 45~48C @ 5.0ghz.

are these considered alright? i've tried both NH-D14 and H70 but difference were minimal. i don't know if i should lap hsf to see if there's going to be any difference. maybe should i get one more water cooling loop??

what's your idle temp at what setup?
 
max load temp on both hsf never went up above 75C @ 4.6ghz, right around 82C @ 4.8 and @ 5.0ghz, it goesabove 90 which i shut it down as soon as it hits 90C...
 
Idle temps do not matter, it's the load temps that do.

Below 80 C load temps is considered acceptable for the Core i series. Based on what you said, it'll be best to keep it around 4.6 ghz. Lapping would not be worth it on these high-end heatsinks because they already are well-lapped. In fact, lapping them would probably net you worse temps, as you probably cannot do it with the same precision they do. The only things you can do is reapply thermal paste properly to see if it helps, get a better heatsink (only one I can think of is Prolimatech Genesis), or go full-blown watercooling, not a all-in-one kit.
 
yea i'm leaning towards more of WC since i have a lot of spares around from my primary but just kinda getting lazy so i thought i'd give air cooler a try since both of those were pretty well known and to be best...
 
On my 2600K, I'm getting an idle of 28C and at max load (Prime 95) it hovers around 59C. Ambient room temp is 21C. I've got mine overclocked to 4.6Ghz with core voltage of 1.35v. (At idle, it steps down to 1.6Ghz, 1.05 vcore though.) Yes, I'm a fan of watercooling. :)
 
Do you have the C states turned off? I'm assuming you do, otherwise the idle temps wouldn't change with clock speed (since it would still downclock to 1.6). Don't worry about idle temps - but I'd think you could do better at load, 80s at that speed seems high for those coolers. Maybe look at your airflow?
