260 or 280?

which do you think is a better deal

GTX 260 192 for $120

or

GTX 280 for $180

definately the GTX 260 at that price. The GTX280 is about the same as the GTX 275, and I wouldn't pay the difference for a 10-15% jump in performance. Also the GTX 280 runs hotter and is very power hungry in comparison.
 
How much longer do u think 260 will be a viable card at 1650 x 1080? 2x / 4x curious as to your opinion. Think that, coupled with 8800gts for physix is a good pair? Already have 8800gts

a gtx280 is more than just 10-15% faster than a 192sp gtx260 in some games. the gtx260 is the way better bang for buck card for sure though.

nobody can give you an answer like that without just making up crap. that is plenty of card for that res at the moment and would surely play games fine for quite a while. also your cpu will help determine how long games will play okay. I personally would not fool with an 8800gts for dedicated physx.
 
CPU will be a i7 920. So u think 8800gts is no good for physx? Wouldn't it take load off gpu? No? Thought that's how it worked.

I look at this card as a 1 year card. Maybe then moving down for physx.

Why does 4890 give better perf? Can it be had for $120-140?
 
you cant go wrong with that price for a 260 (usually ~$200). couple of my buddies are playing bfbc2 with that card and they aint complaining. it wont give you high settings, but it will run.

I was just saying that I personally wouldnt fool with a dedicated card just for those 3 or 4 games.
 
If I already have the card and psu to handle it why not? Is there some kind of hit I'll take in perf?

again I am just saying that I personally would not fool with it just for those few games. I would just sell the card but again that is just me.
 
i have a 260. get the 280! it is faster overall. it has that extra power for higher resolutions.
 
GTX 260 is definitely the better bang for the buck. I would not pay the premium for a GTX 280, but there's always the chance you could find a great deal. The GTX 275 and HD 4890 are better cards in that price range IMO. GTX 285 is a good card but they tend to command a premium (although someone in FS/T is selling two XFX 285's for $200/ea which is a pretty good deal).

Compared to your current card, a 260 would be a significant step up from an 8800GTS and should do well at 1680x1050 for quite a while longer. I recently downgraded to a single GTX 260 and haven't found any games that are anywhere near unplayable at 2560x1600. It's still a powerful card for the price.

If the $60 isnt that big of a deal for ya, get the 280 gtx :)

Its accually a STEAL @ 180
 
I would get the GTX 280. Good price.

I would maybe think twice if that GTX 260 was the 216 version, but it isn't. So I would say for the GTX 280.

I had a GTX 260 192 OC'd running @ 280 stock benchmarks with an e8400 @ 3.6 Ghz on a P45 chipset. I COULD NOT duplicate the same results with an e8400 on an evga 780i motherboard @ 4 GHz. (whatever that means.) GTX 260 192 is a great card for $120, esp. with a bit of an OC bump. :)
