Currently I've got an Viewsonic VX2025WM which is starting to die. I'm at about 25 dead pixels, and I've had this pannel for about 5 years now, so I don't really think it owes me too much.

Monitors I'm looking to replace it with are either

Acer X263WBI (TN pannel, HDMI, DVI inputs)

Samsung T260 (TN pannel, HDMI, DVI inputs) about 100CAD more than the Acer,

and

Samsung 2693HM (TN pannel, HDMI, DVI inputs) for about the same price as the T260.

What I'm trying to figure out (and really haven't been having much luck) is the difference between these pannels, and if either of the Samsung monitors are worth the extra cash over the acer.

Thanks all!

I'm on a Samsung T260HD right now and I'm pretty satisfied. The bleed is a little more than I'd like, but other than that I'm impressed.

I went through a lot of defective/shoddy T240's before I came to this T260HD which I'll probably stay with. It still has a few backlight issues but they don't detract too much. The viewing angle is on par to what you'd expect from a TN panel.

One thing I'll definitely say about Samsung TN panels (and I have owned a bunch) is that they have the best color for TN panels I have seen. Other TN panels from different companies have noticeable dithering and color banding, whereas both are much harder to detect on any of my Samsungs, if at all.

You should be seriously pissed that your monitor is dying at just 5 years. I am currently using two 10 year old Viewsonic PS790s and an 18 year old TV. Retailers and Mfgs want us to consider these $300-$1500 LCD monitors to be disposable and short lived like computers. I say BS!

By Dying I mean a few scattered pixels that are finally starting to get to me, and I really didn't treat the monitor well -- left it on without standby setup, etc. Really, its my own fault that its starting to go.

Any opinions on the Acer? I haven't heard much about it.

Can I TN panel really stand up to a 26 inch monitor in terms of vertical viewing angles? Don't you see a difference in color from top to bottom when looking at it head on (especially in portrait mode?) I'm only asking because I'm also considering this purchase, and I know my laptop's 17 inch WS is very delicate for vertical viewing angles.

Depends how much viewing angles bother you. It's personal taste. Yes, I can tell a difference in brightness between the top and bottom of my monitor. But it doesn't bother me. Other things can be pet peaves of mine, but oddly enough, viewing angle isn't one of them.

Yeah, I kinda feel the same way after doing a lot of LCD research for a new monitor purchase. I think accurate mouse movement is so crucial to computer use that it shouldn't be sacrificed at all, so PVA monitors are out. With IPS, the "screen door effect" sounds really bad if you do a lot of coding/reading, so I'm hesitant of those. Though I don't have any in person experience with IPS monitors, so it makes it kinda difficult to make a purchase, there's really no recourse other than purchasing and praying.

Of course I prefer wide viewing angles, but I feel its one of the things I can "deal with", rather than mouse lag and grainy screens which I think are unnacceptable.

I'm just going to buy a Samsung 2493HM and be done with this madness.

I'm leaning toward the Samsung 2693HM. I called Samsung today to determine if any of their HDMI computer displays (with a 16:10 aspect ratio) featured 1:1 pixel mapping. They couldn't really confirm that it did, though their literature implies that this is the case. See I'd buy a T260, but it doesn't have the height adjustments and TN panels are flaky with vertical viewing angles.

At the moment I'm using a Samsung 245BW, and I would plan on using the new monitor next to it. So the 2493HM, or 2693HM, are the closest match that still features HDMI input for my Xbox 360. I'm currently using the Xbox 360 with a VGA cable @ a resolution of 1360x768. Therefor I consider it mandatory that any new display I get will enable the Xbox to display 1080p without stretching.

To my knowledge the only "computer display" that advertises 1:1 pixel mapping is the Ben-Q G2400WD. And I should have bought one on Monday before Newegg sold out. :)

Doh! I went from this thread to another and discovered that the Samsung 2493HM (which is just like the 2693HM except for size) and it cuts off a 1080p display by 5% on both sides. This is not what I want!
