the only thing is my mobo is x8 pci which may makes the 4870x2 better
psu is hx620
The HX620 is enough to handle any two GPUs. What's the exact make and model of your motherboard? You only have ONE PCIe slot and it's 8x?the only thing is my mobo is x8 pci which may makes the 4870x2 better

Yes, it does. The HX620 has two cables each with a 6-pin and an 8-pin attached.lodingi: I'm not sure if the 620 has the 2 8 pins and 2 6 pins needed... I could be wrong, does it?
According to this diagram: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...83-asus-p5q-pro-p45-motherboard-review-2.html , the P5Q Pro goes into two PCIe 2.0 8 lane connections when using Crossfire. That should be more than sufficient to run any current SLI/Crossfire set-up consisting of two single GPU cards.it's a p5q pro, I think the best bet is to wait for the next big single card, hopefully within the next few months
Interesting article. I think the performance loss is more due to the chipset rather than actual bandwidth limitation. There's definitely a loss, but it doesn't seem to be that large on single slot testing - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pci-express-2.0,1915-10.html . In either case, it might be worth it to hold out for 5870X2 - I just can't see spending more than $300 on old tech like a 4870X2.Okay well at this point the only thing that is holding me back from getting a pair of crossfired 4890's is the x8 pci thing.
From
http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1472/intel_p45_vs_x48_crossfire_performance/index.html
it looks like there is a fairly big performance loss between x16 and x8.
Price wise:
4870x2 - $350
crossfire 4890 - $400
what do other people think about 4890 xfire on an x8 mobo, vs. a 4870x2 running at regular 16x pci (p45 mobo). I guess I could always try to sell my mobo to get an x38 or x48 but really dont want to go through the hassel. I'll probably end up losing around 50$ too...
thanks
you bought a card to "hold you over" for 5-6 months? I would much rather have a card better suited to my rig and play games at higher settings now then to wait half a year.yeah that's what I plan on doing
I just bought a single 4890 for 200 shipped to hold me over until the new 5870x2 comes out.

You'll be fine with a 4890. I played most of my games (TF2, L4D, Fallout 3, etc.) on a 4870 512MB @ 2560x1600 and 50FPS+ before I got my GTX 295.
I'm an eye-candy whore . The 4870 couldn't do AA at that resolution, now I run all those games at 16xQ CSAA .Depends if he whises to be fine... i guess it wasn't fine for you since you got that 295 hehe...
For the OP, If you're playing not intensive games, buy one 4890 or 275, that's if you plan on going GT300/RV870, if not get a 4890CF(careful with brand and acoustics) or a 295.
