I had my machine running Vista on a 80GB WD Sata2 drive for a while. Never noticed a lot of sound but ran out of space.

So I changed over to a Western Digital 250GB Sata2. This drive is a lot noisier. All the drive seeking is audible (clicking); something I never heard with the 80GB. Is that normal for a larger drive with a larger cache be like this or should I RMA the drive? It was an OEM from newegg.

I tested it with HDtune and everything looks fine. I seem to think it loads programs a lot slower than the 80GB too but I may just be crazy.

audible clicking is bad. real bad. could be days, could be months. backup the important data, sorry.

All of my WD drives have been more or less silent, so you may have a bad one.

I have a WD1600YS and it click once in a while running Vista and it is at different times and it varies the amount of times it does it. Mine checks out alright also in fact I just added a second drive of the same kind to this build and right now there is silence no clicks at all so i guess you don.t worry about something until it happens I always have my data backed up .

My WD 250gig is been making that same ennoying sound since I got it. I even rmad it and the same sound is there.
Thanks

You all realize that some level of clicking during seeking is completely normal right?

Some drives are silent, others loud enough to hear across a room.
