Whats the better drive? I read Doug Lite's thread about HDDs and narrowed it down to these 2 drives:

Hitachi T7K250 - $107
WD WD2500KS - $112

Those drives are really close. If it will be your boot/game/application drive, I'd give the edge to the WD2500KS thanks to the 16MB buffer. For media storage, the Hitachi drive's higher density shines with better transfer performance as well as fewer moving parts (And by extension, less heat and noise).

the drive will not be a boot drive as I have a raptor for that. i've always stuck with WD because I've never had a problem with their stuff and their warranty is top notch. what would you pick if you had the choice?

Wow, I'm a huge WD2500KS fan-boy. I also like the fact that WD offers advance replacement on their drives. All other things being roughly equal, and you have a good record with WD, there's no reason not to stay with them, as their drives are better than ever. Don't be suprised if after committing to WD, you have one of them fail though :p Hard drives have a nasty habit of failing just when you trust them most :(

yeah, im a big fan too of WD. I love their warranties and replacement plans (the advance replacement is THE BEST). I made the decision that I wanted the WD drive primarily because of the past experiences, and the 16mb cache. But after reading some reviews the hitachi drive was highly recommended. I been agonizing on which drive to get as storage and your advice has convinced me to go with the WD.

Thanks for your help!

well, i went to order the WD drive today and the price went from $112 to $126 :( The Hitachi drive is still $107. I do need the drive soon so I dont know if I can wait till that price drops.

Check out ClubIT. They have the drive for 119 shipped. So far they look like a top notch online retailer.
