I just got a 250gb 16mb cache Western Digital HD. It's a SATA drive, so I put it into the drive bay, I hooked up the Western Digital Serial ATA Cable with SecureConnect to it, I connected the cable from the drive to the 2nd SATA port on my motherboard (the first one is in use), I connected a molex connector to the legacy power end, and I started up my computer. The drive won't detect as new hardware, and if I hit delete on start up and try to detect it in BIOS it won't find it either.

It won't detect the drive when I boot up, it won't detect it in BIOS, it won't detect it in Windows. What did I do wrong?

motherboard is an Abit IS-7
OS is windows xp pro

Change the jumpers on the drive so that it only runs in SATA 1 mode, otherwise your motherboard won't detect it. Instructions are either in your manual you may have got with the drive, or on WD website.

check to see if the drive is spinning (just put a fnger on it, you can usually feel it)

try a different cable? try it in the other SATA port?

The drive didn't come with any jumpers. It's not a retail drive, it just shipped in the bag. I had to order the SATA cable separate. Do I need to find a jumper for it? My working SATA drive is in the SATA1 port on my drive, I was putting this one in the SATA2 port, does that matter?

I'm almost certain the drive is spinning, as I put my finger on the top of it and it's vibrating like my other working drives. I tried it in another port and it didn't detect it, but the same port detects my working SATA drive. I haven't tried a different cable yet.

Just grab a jumper from somewhere else. It doesnt have to be special. And old one from a motherboard, a hard drive, a sound card, whatever, they'll do the job. The instructions are here.

I added the jumper and the drive still can't be detected, I don't know what the problem is.
