I already own a i7 950 and I had to build another computer. Is the i7 2500k with a mediocre ~$100 motherboard using as my main rig over the i7 950 with an X58A-UD3R. I have not picked the motherboard yet for the i5 2500k. I was thinking about the GA-P67A-UD3-B3 for the 2500k

Stock the 2500K will beat the 950 in most tests. Overclocked YMMV but i'd still expect the 2500K to win.

With current modules the 950 can support more ram and offers more PCIe lanes which may be a benefit in some special situations.

In most applications the 2500K will be faster, especially when overclocked. In highly-multithreaded applications, the 950 will probably be faster because it has Hyperthreading. Chances are you'd see better real-world performance from the 2500K.

I don't know, man. SNB is a great, GREAT chip, but I think x58 is a better platform if you do gaming and such.

Only with three or more GPUs. With two or fewer GPUs, the X58 is actually worse since current LGA 1366 CPUs are less efficient (on a performance-to-clock basis). In fact, if you go X58 you'd need a hexa-core CPU just to equal or beat the i5-2500K in games. And the cheapest hexa-core LGA 1366 CPU is still expensive, at $600.

... 2500k will be faster ...
1155 is a great platform, but ... you have to be sure to get a good motherboard.

Although, if you are using a X58 why don't you wait for the die shrink of the sandy bridges to 22nm ... ? You X58 and that motherboard will allow you to overclock the 950 to 4-4.2Ghz without any problems... and it's more than enough for gaming ...

Not waiting is not really a choice I need a certain number of functioning computers so I was purchasing this one no matter what. The question is which one will I use for my main rig.

BTW I decided to try to get myself running on the 2500k and it has not been going well. Problems with memory and video card crashing detailed here.
