2500k Just built - CPU Heat problem.

I just built my sandy bridge rig about 30 mins ago.

2500k (stock cooler)
p8p67 pro
8gig ddr3 1333
gti 570

After windows install, I decide to go check out the new EFI bios and it is telling me my CPU is running at 88C. So I immediately powered down, took off the heatsink, removed the stock thermal paste, and added some artic silver 5... Powered back up went to bios and now its reading 87C

Is this just a case of a shitty stock cooler? Also, how hot is too hot for a 2500k?
 
Considering the SB recall thats going on I would say your problem may be related. Most mobo manufacturers are recalling their boards because of a design flaw.
 
That has nothing to do with my CPU heat problem. The design flaw only affect the SATA 3 gb ports. I am only using the SATA 6gb ports.

How did you apply the paste? Try the single rice grain method.

Double check if the heatsink is properly mounted and secure, the Stock Heatsink is known to be difficult to work with. It should not move at all, and check if the heatsink itself is getting hot.

Try a different monitoring program in windows as well.
 
I think I am just going to go to microcenter before they close and pickup a better heatsink/fan. Any recommendations?
 
Probably the best price to performance cooler for SB at the moment. I think many people get 4ghz+ OCs with it fine. Actually what I am going to use but 4 cents cheaper.
 
The HSF that you chose is good. You may also want to consider applying the TIM based on the instructions in the HSF user guide (yes, the HSF will come with some TIM of its own).

Uhh...I think most of us understand that. I was keenly inquiring what the design flaw with the SATA3.0 ports could possibly have to do with high CPU temps. I'm just curious as to what sort of explanation he could manage to spew for some lulz.
 
What happens when you try stress testing? (not sure how much a windows install stresses the CPU)
Have you looked for any fan control settings in the BIOS?
Are you overclocking?
Did you remove the existing thermal paste before applying the AS5? if so how did you remove it?
Did you feel the temperature of the CPU when you removed the heatsink?
What is ventilation in the case like?

Intel spec the maximum "case temperature" (that is the temperature of the outside of the CPU package where it joins the heatsink) as 72.6C but i'm not sure what the difference is between core and case temperatures.

I know, but I really didn't want to hear his excuse as to where he's been hiding all of this time.
 
I bought the Hyper 212 from microcenter. Now I am running at 33-36C idle. Sweeeet! Thanks guys.

On a side note, installing that beast was a chore. I had to take my mobo completely back out of my case, and I had already sorted all my wiring and stuff. Oh well! I am up and running and I love my new system.

I don't advise anyone to use the stock cooler from Intel. It is utter trash.
 
What thermal paste did you go with? I'm about to pick one up from newegg and I got a stick of AS5 already; but if their is something better out there (that I can order from newegg also) then I'll go ahead and get it while I order it.
 
I stuck with AS5 because I already had some on my processor. Someone recommended the tube of stuff that comes w/ the Hyper 212.
 
I recommended the TIM that came with the Hyper 212 Plus, but Arctic Silver 5 is acceptable. But did you apply a fresh batch of AS5 or reuse what you already have on the processor?
 
Btw, the BIOs temperature is not always accurate. My own MSI board's UEFI BIOs seems to be always off by at least 10 celcius.

Use Real Temps 365 or Everest.

I personally dont' like my i5-2500k running over 60C @ load, but that's just me.

I have that exact Sandy Bridge build, but went with the Hyper 212 right away. I heard bad things about the stock cooler.

Glad to see you fixed your heating issue :)
