2500k hitting 90c and downclocking

I have a 2500k I've been running for some time at around 4.1 Ghz with an Arctic Cooler Freezer 13. I'm on an Asus P8P67LE.

In the BIOS my only options for voltage are via offset, and I'm running at +0.025, CPU-Z is showing 1.38 - 1.39 vcore. I plan on putting this CPU on water soon, and I'll be doing a motherboard upgrade along with it. I haven't tried OCing this in a long time so I thought I'd play around with it, and I'm currently at 100x44.

I'm just wondering if these temps are normal (I don't think they are), and what may be the cause. I also notice that in RealTemp, I get 4 temp numbers which I assume are the cores, and one is ~5c+ lower than the others almost all the time. Is that normal?

I also wanted to ask about the downclocking, I assume that's the motherboard or CPU throttling itself due to heat, since I have all the Speed Step stuff disabled?
 
The temps are a bit high and its probably because the vcore is way too high for 4.1ghz IMO.
 
I set the voltage to auto in the BIOS (i.e no offset) and it's still running at ~1.38 and hitting 90c under Prime95.

Like I said in the OP I also notice the leftmost of the 4 numbers in RealTemp is 5-10c behind the others. If these are the cores, is it possible the ACF13 isn't seated properly?
 
you need to set a negative offset if allowed. Each step you move up intel has the chip up the vid which raises the core voltage. For 4.5 my 2500k only needs 1.285 and for 4.7 is around 1.325. Are you doing your overclocking old school multiplier or doing it in turbo?
 
The downclocking could be temp but depending how much power your board can supply it might throttle down as well.

I can set a negative offset, I just assumed the default would be whatever it's supposed to run at. Didn't realize I'd have to set a negative offset just to run at 'default' voltage.

I'm not touching the FSB (if it's still called that), just using the multiplier (100x44). I have turbo/speed step disabled.
 
thats part of the high temp then too, it is getting the voltage constant without a chance to cool down. My board runs outta cpu power after 140 watts and will actually shut down. I would use hwinfo 64 so you can see more details including the power draw (not exact but my board shuts down if it passes 148watts).

? It can't cool down when you're running Prime95, I don't see how the voltage not fluctuating when it's in idle affects temps during Prime95.

Core 0 is always 5-10c below the other 3, so maybe it's seated incorrectly. And I find it really odd that setting voltage to Auto puts it at 1.37.
 
Because the constant voltage has you idling probably in the 40+ range if your hitting those temps. You can always give re seating the cooler a shot, the auto voltage is annoying unless doing turbo overclocking.It sucks you can't just set your voltage to 1.285 or so but if you play with the negative offset (might have to set it as low as it goes) and check your voltage core idle and under load you should be able to get it down a lot.
edit- I would hate to see what voltage your board would set on auto for 50x :eek:

I set the offset sign to - and set it at 0.020, and couldn't even boot. This whole offset system is ridiculous, that's the last time I buy a cheaper motherboard.

At this point though, my temps are fine during gaming since it's usually not running full load. Something is clearly fucked, but I planned on upgrading in a few months anyways so I'll just ride this out until then. I'll be using my same CPU, but a new motherboard and water cooling so I just have to make it until then without my CPU melting itself. Since it's been going for 2 years at that voltage, it should be alright.
 
I wish i would have spent more on my board and graphics card. i can game at 5g's but ibt and prime make my board cry up that high.
