When I took my 2500+ from 166MHz FSB to 188FSB (I don't want to change voltagestuff) my benchmark scores dropped. I figured going from 1833->2067 (12% or so) I should get some minor performance gain. Am I doing something wrong? I pretty went into BIOS and upped my FSB, saved and tested.

Sounds like diminshing returns...It is a barton right???

I would say give it a bump of vcore.....

I have seen ocing P4s my sandra scores will either fluctuate a lot or drop and it is usually a sign the system is flaky and no way will pass prime95 sability testing....A boost up of vcore usually solved the score but necessarily mean stability in stress testing...

Do you have ddr ram set to spd??? maybe as you upped the fsb the ddr spd switched it to cas 2.5 or something and in that case you could see some drops in synthtic crap benches like 3dmark....

Just to ppl here, I will tell you I dislke the use of synthetic benchmarks alone and really detest ppl who live and die by 3dmark scores like somehow it id the all knower of their system....

My DFI NF2 board would do that as well as my shuttle and my wifes 2100+ tbred I have at 2.08ghz....

Yeah, It's a barton (at least it's got 512kbyte L2 cache and does 166MHz fsb standard)and I can't up my vcore, because.. Yarr! If I were to lower my FSB a bit, with it still being OCed, would I experience a performance boost?

If it isn't something silly like DDR ratio or spd setting the cas timings manually I would say drop it a few mhz and se if it helps....

Also run sandra memory to see if the mem scores drop..That could be a sign of something changing memory wise....

What apps were you noticing worse scores???

Since I haven't got much installed yet, I used 3dmark 2001. I dropped 500-750 points.

OK don't be too worried yet....That is just one app but definitely check the timings and make sure raising the fsb didn't change something in ddr divider or ram timings....

So, err, I screwed up.
My computer won't boot, so I figure I should reset CMOS right?
I've got a NF7, should I just move the jumper to reset CMOS mode as in the manual and then put it back to how it was before, then boot?

Ah sorry I'm back, I was moding my case to get some better Air flow and doing a little bit of wire fungsway. :)

ok about the thing being grayed out, my advice maybe a little late but yeah go into the Bios and see what setting its on. Play around with the ratios a bit some work better then others.

Now about it not booting, yeah just switch the jumper and then move it back or you could just take out the battery and leave it for awhile, either way it will go back to factory defaults and should allow you to boot again.

Yay, it works again!
Anyway, when I change from 166 to 188 the memory timings go from 7-3-3-2.5 to 8-3-3-3. Could this be the source of my performance loss? Oh and my FBS:DDR ratio was set on Auto.

What memory are you running? Those timings are extremely loose and are likely to be why your losing performance; if you manually change them to something like 6-3-3-2 (tighter timings) then you should get a better score. However, timings change from memory to memory, I'm running my Corsair XMS PC3500 at 5-2-2-2 even though it's only rated for 6-3-3-2 (but I'm only running my FSB at 198 instead of the 216 the memory is rated for).

can't you just hold your insert key down when you start the computer to reset FSB? It works on my 8KHA+; it's a handy little trick.

It could be one reason, if your comp can't handle the lower timings at higher speeds then you have 2 choices...

1. Set the timings to manual and maybe up the ram voltage depending on if it boots/ doesn't boot correctly.

2. Live with the lower timings

Another thing is if your running Cpu-z, open it up and look under "Memory" see what it says under FSB : DRAM for instance I have 1 : 1 meaning that my FSB and Ram speed are insync with each other giving me the best performance.

I did that, which caused my computer inability to boot..
Here's my CPU-Z thingie:

This is at stock though, it looked pretty much the same OCed, except different timings.
