2500+ overclock too hot?

Howdy all,

long time reader fist time poster...

I have an unlocked Barton 2500+ which is overclocked to 186*11=2047. I can't get above this speed with any stability. Temps around 49C idle - 60C under load at 1.72V. i have this h/s - fan at 4600 rpm but its generic. any thoughts ideas?? i'd like to get it running at 3200+ speeds but not sure if it's capable.

What do you have for case fans?

This is the first 2500 I've heard of that couldn't make it to 3200 with ease. :(
 
generic stuff - one blowing in at the front and one blowing out at the back. System temps = 30-35C (idle/load)

you sure you need your vcore that high? Mines at 1.65 and it is running 190x11...

did you try memtest just in case, some overclocks have not worked just because of bad ram...

I'll run memtest tonight - i noticed you didn't quite have yours up to 2.2Ghz - will it not go there?
I lose all stability if i set my voltage any lower. I think it's an early stepping proc, anyone know if those are poor o/c's?

Also - of note - it really doesn't like any multipliers other than 11. I've read that some unlocked Bartons don't like certain multipliers - can anyone confirm this?

Are you using the SPD ram timings? You're not doing crazy stuff like trying to run it at 2-2-2? I'd be really surprised if that stick of ram is bad, since Kingston is a good company.

Did you record the CPU serial number when you built the machine? You should do that when you upgrade your HSF. With your video card, going past 200x11 doesn't increase performance in Doom3 (I have the same card, overclocked, and there's no difference between 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz in Doom3). HL2 might be different, because of the physics engine, but it's too early to tell.

A good quiet HSF is the Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu. Check Zalman's site to see if it will fit on your board, then measure to make sure that it will clear your PSU. If you don't care about noise, then the Thermalright SP-97 might be the one for you.

I have a bunch of friends with this CPU (locked and unlocked) and they've all been able to do 200x11 at stock voltages. Most of them (including mine at first) were running the Vantec Aeroflow (rev 1) HSF.

Nope, mine wont go above 195, wont even go to 196! No clue why, I tried everything, I played with memory timings, (memtest runs with no errors), played with vcore, everything I could think of by It doesn't want to hit 200...

I can't confirm it, but my chip won't run stable at any multiplier thats not stock :confused:
 
Memtest ran to 1hr 07 minutes without error. figured that was enough as I've tested this RAM before on my shuttle case in the living room.

took some advice and got a decent hs and fan. Picked up this one. First run was straight to 2.2G and upped the voltage to 1.8v. running at 44C with the fan at 3600rpm and computer idle. Prime95'ed for about 30 minutes (i know, I'll do it longer later) with the fan at max (deafening btw) and no probs. gonna try turning down the voltage now to see what i can do it with.

will post results tomorrow.

I don't understand why you are upping your voltage at all. Try putting it back down to it's default now that you have a decent HSF. You might find it'll be a lot cooler now!
 
Did you look at the markings on the pcb when you swapped the heatsink? What did you use for thermal paste? Everything is seated correctly?

It might be because with the early Bartons, AMD wasn't getting enough 3200s out of the wafer. With the later steppings, they would have just been 3200s that didn't meet their standards, or 3200s binned as 2500s just to get them out the door.

Either that, or you just got a bad chip with a decent stepping.

It must be an early one cuz I bought it fairly early on and the mulitplier is unlocked. More after 8 hours sleep but it seems to be stable at 3200+ speed and 1.8v. Incidently it wouldn't P95 at any other voltage - this is as low as it will go, and at 1.65v it wouldn't even POST.

Got the WCPUID bmp but not sure how to attatch a picture here.

OK so I've been running stable but a little warm for the last 12 hours at 3200+ and 1.8V.

With the fan down at 3300RPM I've got idle temps around 50C. Ambient is about 30C as I live in Hong Kong. With the aircon running I lose about 5-9C which makes temps acceptable. With the fan up around 4000RPM the temps drop about 4C with idle ~43C and load around 55C.

The HSF is great! That must have been what was holding me back - temps.
Anyway I'm in the 3200+ club now and happy. Have tried some higher speeds but can't get P95 stable. How high do you think I could push the voltage on this thing without risk of burnage?

If it took 1.8V to get to 2.2GHz, then you're not likely to get any higher unfortunately. :(
 
I've had similar experiences with the 2500+ Bartons. At least one of the two I have in my dual system (both are from an early run) are only comfortable at 2GHz; I can get to 2.1, but I have to raise the voltage a lot, and the temperature goes way up.

My brother has a newer Barton 2500+ in the green organic packaging; it's stable past 2.2GHz, but only with a raised multiplier; like yours, it doesn't like FSB speeds past the mid-180s.

Those are the breaks, I guess.

Unless you are going to be doing Folding or something like that that requires 100% accuracy in number munching, forget Prime95. If you can play extended games and keep the cpu at 100% load with no stability issues, what does it matter? On my last XP chip, stock was 1.8ghz, anything past 2.0ghz and P95 would fail eventually. But I ran that chip at 2.3-2.4ghz the whole time and never crashed out of a game, Windows never crashed, nothing ever got corrupted, so I said Prime95 can eat my shorts. :eek: ;)
 
60C is too hot for me, but it's well within the Barton 2500+'s spec. It is rated to run fine up to around 92C, so it's not in the Panic Zone or anything.
 
Your present cooler is pretty mediocre for overclocking. There aren't enough fins, they're too thick, and too far apart .. they're aluminum, not copper .. and the fan is pretty weak.

Grab a Dynatron DY1206BH-625 copper heatsink-- these little bastards are absolutely spectacular. All copper, well attached fins, VERY thin, tons of them. A solid metal housing keeps the air in a very tight flow through the sink, so the velocity of the air shooting through the fins is magnificent. Their bases are perfectly milled, no lapping required at all. They ARE noisy-- but it's well worth it. If you really need more cooling power, go liquid.

I used one with some Arctic Silver 5 and an open window to run my 1700+ (1.45 GHz) at 2.2 GHz, 1.75v, with no stability issues whatsoever.. at **16C FULL LOAD**. These are nothing short of amazing. You should have NO problem overclocking a Barton with one of these.
 
Actually I pcked up a better hs and fan the Thermaltake POLO735. It has a rheostat for fan control and has allowed me to get up to 2.2GHz. The problem I guess is that I need 1.8V to get there but now I'm going to try gaming instaed of P95 to see about stability.

i love my sp97, and now that ive got my fan controller the tornado isnt very loud, so this is a great cooling solution. I think i hav a bad chip, cause i cant stable over 205, so i just run at 200 cause the 60mhz really isnt worth the extra heat (need to up the vcore alot to stable).
 
My Barton would run 2.7. 2.5something on water.

Bump your voltage to 1.9 or 2.0 and see how it does. I run my work rig (1700@2.2) at 70c all day long.
 
Uh, at 1.9v or 2.0v it's not going to be running too cool, no matter how good your heatsink is. If you're going that high, you pretty much have to have a liquid, peltier or vapor cooling setup or it's going to be very hot. It doesn't look like the original poster is too thrilled with his 60C, much less your 70. :)
 
Im running a thouroughbred 2600+ chek sig for system, and i can oc it to 2800+, and its weird that my system thinks its a 2800+ hehe didnt know it would do that. Im running a copper heatsink with a fan adaptor for a 80mm fan. There must be a way i can run this thing higher. i am running the volts on my mobo to +7.5% at 1.74v. My temps at idle are around 49, and case temp of 32 all in celcius. The fsb is at 180 which is 2.25mhz, but i cant seem to get any higher...plus i dont think it will autodetect to any other card since 2800+ is the max thouroughbred isnt it? is there a way i can oc more? help me please lol

edit:my psu seems to be weak, its a powerup 350w...mabey thats limiting me?
every so often my game freezes, but im not sure if its the vidcard OC doin that or the cpu OC. :confused:
 
Well the test results are in.

Managed to get it stable at 192*12=2304MHz. Had to jump it to 1.95V though! Got it to run at 194*12 but not stable. temps were idling pretty high - upper 40's and load was 59C.
Just for a hoot I ran it to 200*12 = 2.4GHz but even at 2.03V I couldn't get it to stay stable in windows. Not sure about volts up higher than that. for now I'm pretty happy with 3200+ (I knew she would do it..).

The fsb is at 180 which is 2.25mhz, but i cant seem to get any higher...plus i dont think it will autodetect to any other card since 2800+ is the max thouroughbred isnt it? is there a way i can oc more? help me please lol
2.25 is in excess of a 3200+ and that's a good speed. I found my heatsink and fan were holding me back. couldn't get past 2.06 stable.
You might consider a better fan - or upping the voltage. i couldn't get mine stable at 2.2G until i upped the volts to 1.8V.

Nothing wrong with those temps. Again, I run at 70c daily. If it is not causing stability issues, don't worry about it. People here freak out on temps tooooo much. They think if you dont run 40 or less your rig is fucked. :rolleyes:

Why not drop your multiplier and get your FSB up? Performance will be gained.
 
Yea - it's all about the voltage, and the cooling, and the ambient temps...i could go on. I also have to find a speed and temp I'm happy leaving it at for 4 days at a time in the hands of my wife! (I'm a pilot and do long patterns sometimes) So I've settled on a fan speed that's quiet-ish and a clock speed that's acceptable. If I need more speed, well I know I can get another 100Mhz out of her stably with higher temps and more noise!

As for dropping the multiplier - in intial testing I did just that to find the max fsb this ram would do but had unhappy results. It wouldn't go stably over 210. A bit disappointing. tried upping the volts but didn't make any difference. how much more voltage would you give the sticks?

RAM is at SPD timings - haven't messed with it at all. It's 3-3-3 RAM and from what I've seen it's nothing special. Maybe some one else that has this Kingston Value RAM can share their experience with it?

i run 49c idle, but when its real hot here, i run about 55 or 56 and my computer freezes whenever i play a game within a few minutes?
