24x4 LCD fit in one or two bays?

and i doubt you'd be able to even stick a 20x4 into a single 5.25" bay either, the screen area might well fit (sometimes), but most of the pcb boards would still interfere with the bays both above and below it.
 
Well, first of all, there aren't any HD44780 4x24 LCDs. There are 2x24s and 4x20s, but a single HD44780 controller chip cannot handle more than 80 characters.

Second, no, you can not fit a 4x20 in a 5.25" bay. I have never seen one that would fit (the screen is too big &the PCB takes up quite a bit of space). You will even be hard-pressed to find a 2x20 that fits. Make sure to not the height of the PCB when ordering because, again, many of them have PCBs which are larger than a 5.25" bay height.
