lots of pictures here, i tried to make them smaller so i'm sorry if this takes forever to load. this is one of my first attempts at any kind of mod, so please excuse my sloppy work.
here it goes, i was given a full tower case and motherboard.
the problem with the case is that the motherboard has to be installed upside down, but the PSU is still in the traditional location. i have about ten 400w PSU's laying around not doing anything but none of the 20 (or 24pin mobo connectors even come close to fitting in this case). even if i took of the connector and ran it through the HD cage, the wires still wouldn't be long enough, especially with the VGA card in the way.
i really wanted to make use of this well constructed (but very poorly designed) case so i decided to extend the 24pin connector of this PSU. i really didn't want to spend any money on this.
i labeled all of the wires and then cut them in the middle
i cut twenty-four 12" extension peices of 16 AWG stranded electrical wire and stripped the ends and started soldering them to the original connector
i used heat shrink to cover up the soldered exposed portions of the wire
and before you knew it (about 3 hours later) i was done
the system powers on just fine, the voltages are slighly lower but still within spec, so i'm extremely happy with how this turned out. here is the PSU in the system
the system is
A64 3000+, skt 754
1gb DDR400
nForce3 mobo
geforce fx 5500
