24pin to 20pin mod?

First of all, I apologize if this has already been asked/answered/discussed. I have done some extensive searching and have not found any mentionable results. Moving on ;).

Hello, I have a question regarding a PSU mod that I performed a while back. I have a Vantec Stealth 520watt PSU with the standard 24 pin atx connector that I “clipped” down to a 20 pin. I know that this “works” as I used this PSU w/mod to power my rig for about a year and a half.

And then all of the sudden I had a power up issue. Did some plugging and unplugging and to make a long story short my MoBo, VCard and an HD all died. Along with one FD power cable on the PSU itself.

***By “clipping” the connector I mean I cut off the last 4 pins, which I then capped and electric taped singly and then as a group.

I am asking this because I am not sure if this “mod” was a cause in the PSU’s failure (since it did run for a significant amount of time before having a problem) or if there was another issue (not looking for a diagnosis, but if it is thought that this kind of mod could have produced a power surge or something similar). I am looking at purchasing another PSU, Antec TP 480 probably. And would like to be able to, if possible, circumvent the 24 to 20 pin adapter by performing the same mod again.

Thanks for reading this long and ridiculous thread. :D and thanks for any input as well.

ummmm......
why dont u just use the adaptor. your stealth even came with an adaptor to use. why would u bother wasting all the time of cutting ur psu cables when u can use the supplied adaptor and keep the warranty that goes with ur psu and not have to worry about figuring out what problems could happen with the mod.

I doubt your mod did anything to blow up your computer

Next time?

Buy a PSU that has a plug that is 20 +4

A lot easier than modding it yourself

I was and am still pretty sure my mod didn't cause the deaths. I am looking into a couple models right now that are 20+4 models, thanks for the input.

This image along with others reinforces my thoghts that that mod was not the killer :p

That looks like the Antec Truepower ][. I'm currently using the 430 Watt, and I can attest to its silence. I would guess it's stable...I haven't had any problems, but neither have I put a voltmeter in there yet.
