Hello everyone.
I bought a Dell 2405FWP 3 days ago and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.
My concern now is about HDCP and whether I will have problems playing next-gen high def movies on it. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26703

Since I only just got it I'm wondering if I should return it and wait for HDCP support. I sure wouldn’t want to have to replace it in a year or two. Since this is quite and investment I appreciate any advise.
Thanks

I wouldn't worry. Vista will be out in a year or so and if they do actually follow through with this, there will be bypasses...please note my optimism :D

If Microsoft really does intend to prevent people from playing hi-def video on their non-hdcp monitors, they are shooting themselves in the foot, IMO.

The most basic computer user already has no reason to upgrade to vista - i don't think it truly offers anything new in the way of functionality, and lower-end users won't even get the eye candy because their hardware isn't up to it.

If they do the hdcp-restriction scheme, they are then cutting off enthusiasts, the kind of people who do spend 1000+ for a monitor and would be likely to buy multiple copies of vista for the various machines they have around the house. No one that has a 30" apple or a dell 2405 is going to buy vista if it means that their expensive ass monitor gets restricted to standard-def quality.

And remember, these enthusiasts are the kind of people neighbors and family rely on for advice about computers and software. Negativity about vista will spread so quickly from the top down that it will take an enormous effort on Microsoft's part to counteract it.

Very good points guys, thanks.
Maybe I will keep it when it arrives and hope that it will work for those discs. That would be a lot better than waiting.
It would be kinda ironic if only the pirated movies would work on older machines. Although it looks like piracy is on a real decline.
Now I can't wait for it to arrive.

The thing is that Windows versions prior to Windows Vista don't have the support for outputting HDCP encrypted content. So you won't be able to view the content (in pure HD) anyway.

And you have to remember that this antipiracy move from Microsoft is an answer to the motion picture industry's demands. They haven't included it because most people want it, they've included it so that those who DO want to be able to watch HD movies on their computers will be able to (with the appropriate hardware).

rememeber it isnt microsoft shooting themselves in the foot its the MPAA shooting all of its users in the face.

I dunno bout that. Think about the sway that Microsoft has, if they dont like something the MPAA says, then thats that. They implemented this cause they're going all tight ass with piracy with their new OS. Microsoft have said that people don't have a choice, they have to do what they say pretty much.

I wouldnt worry but, any piracy measures they release they'll just be a crack for it anyway. When Vista comes out itll be heaven for software crackers cause itll give em a challenge. HDCP will be cracked, but thats if people even bother moving to Vista. If they keep up with alot of their proposed changes, im predicting a pretty big swing towards Linux cause itll be there, no anti-piracy, with open arms, waiting for all the disgruntleds lol.

I have no doubt that you will be about to play Blu-Ray discs on XP machines/Linux boxes eventually anyway. After all, all someone has to do is write a rogue DVD viewer program that authenticates HDCP with the DVD, then just outputs a regular DVI signal to the monitor.

What the MPAA is really doing is forcing people to use hacks and/or pirate movies now. I mean, when it comes down to basically screwing paying customers in the ass, what do they hope to accomplish? What incentive is thier to being a paying customer when the only way you get the content the way it was intended was to be force to spend $2000-$3000 to get an entirely new computer and monitor when the technology is released.

It seem like each new iteration of content "protection", it becomes more and more difficult for legitimate users to actually be able to use what they purchased. The government needs to stop licking the shit out of corporate assholes while letting them sodomize the consumers.

they are going to try like hell to not end up where the music industry is. With storage and net bandwidth soaring it wont be long until it happens for them so expect them to not go dying into the night :(

I really cant complain too much cause I pirate more music and software then anyone I know, hell I havent actually paid for a windows licsense the entire 14 years or so I've been using it.

u guys are missing the point...

microsoft isnt blocking hd content... microsoft is allowing pc users to view high def content from hollywood IF u have hdcp... if micrsooft didnt support hdcp stuff then u wouldnt be able to view it PERIOD... this is a push by hollywoods demands... microsoft cirtainly doesnt care! think!

microsoft want to keep media accessable via the pc.. for media center pcs and such... and for mpaa wasnt too keen on that, we should be happy that ms did this so we can view it at all... note: os's that dont do this .. u wont be able to view blue-ray and hd dvd movies in full res regardless of ur display!.

this isnt microsoft, this is mpaa, yell at them. personally i think its foolish,, wont there be hdcp capable dvi inputs for ppl to get high def content and record it? i mean ?? am i missing something... when ati makes there 2k7 vivo card wont it have hdcp? if not what good would it be?

noe this is a clear example of misunderstanding... if u dont have vista or some scheme that handles hdcp u wont be able to even view next gen dvds (blue ray or hd dvd) at full res regardless of ur dispay's capabilities....

so far vista is the only one that will allow u to view it under any circumbstances!

You will be able to, just not using official software ;).

EDIT:

Personally, this could be a good thing. It will give all the script kiddies something productive to work on (breaking HDCP) instead of writing viruses.
