2405FPW on FX5200?

Hey all,
Will the FX5200 support the resolution on the 2405FPW? I wanted to find out because if so, I will seriously consider buying one...

I'm using a cheep mini computer with a built in Intel graphics that shares memory. And this cheap video card that can't do worth anything easily can bring the 21inch CRT I have upto it's max, 2048*1536 while at 32bit.

I think most the time now a days any card can go this high. Back in the days where video cards had 4-8megs of ram you might of had trouble running high resolutions without lowering color. So most cards have enouch memory most high resolutions. The only reason cards have 256megs+ of ram is for games and 3D.

So if a cheap crappy Intel Extreme Graphics intergrated card can do 2048*1536, then your 5200 can too.

Though, here's the thing, when it comes to widescreen resolutions, your video drivers have to support it, so even if the card has the ability, it might not be able to due to the drivers. So you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky, does your card have no trouble with widescreen resolutions?

On this Intel that can go beyond 1600*1200 upto 2048*1536 I had trouble selecting the native res for a 2005fpw, it only gave the option to choose 1600*1050 instead of 1680*1050 , all because of the drivers.

no it will not support the 2405fpw

Where did you learn that?

Was it that link above? They don't list his card, except the mobile version which is different since it's in a laptop with unsupported drivers and only VGA. They even show a card that supports the 2405 but not the 2005, which is odd. And those listed are what Dell offered and their drivers most likely and don't represent what will work with the lasted nvidia/ati drivers, official, leaked, or betas.

Taken from that page:
If you are ordering a Dell widescreen monitor to be used with a non-Dell system, please inquire with the system manufacturer to confirm resolution support.

Download the latest driver from nvidia. From what I can see of the list that Dell provides, it is limited. Seems mostly like it is video cards that they sell and recommend you buy. I did read on this board that someone was running the 2405 on a ti 4600 just fine, so the fx5200 should be alright. I have the fx5200 running on another comp. and the native resolution of 1920 x 1200 is supported. When I get my 2405 in, I will hook it up.

found this .pdf file regarding supported modes under the latest driver. scroll down to page 43 to see the FX series, including the 5200.

I have an old AIW Radeon 8500DV and 1920 x 1200 is supported according to the "list all modes" button in the display, adapter section.

I find it VERY hard to believe that the FX5200 wouldn't support that res... games of course are a different story.

Just double checking that you know that even though the 4600 has a lower model number it's still plenty faster than a 5200. But yes, it being so old and supports this monitor then the 5200 probably would too.

You probably already know about the bad naming schemes used with video cards these days, but since you're new to the forum I just wanted to double check.

Yes, I was basing my conclusion on age and updated driver information. The ti4600 came out in early to mid 2002 correct? I am not guaranteeing that you will have buttery smooth game play at the native resolution using the 5200, but I am sure it will be adequate. At least until the prices drop on the higher end cards.

The 5200 is just renamed GF4MX, but with DX9, right? So a GF4 TI 4600 would be much faster. Even a GF 3 vanilla or Ti 500 version is faster than a 5200 or GF4mx cards (which the mx cards are just renamed GF2mx cards with DX7 still). I'd have to double check on all that, but I think it's the truth.

That's all fine and dandy but that is most likely a VGA mode , not a DVI mode. There have been plenty of reports already that more than a few of the models on this list do not support 1920x1200 with DVI. The only way to know is to listen to the actual reports , and totally disregard any listing of supported VGA resolutions..

I don't know about you guys but I would not be happy with running an expensive screen like that at that kind of resolution with that kind of fidelity expectation on an analog connection..
