2405 Pva?

I read a thread that mentioned this was a PVA panel, at first I thought perhaps it was a mistake but it turns out that it is a PVA panel and not IPS. Wouldn't the 2005FPW be a faster display given that it's an IPS?

Faster? If you mean would the 2005FPW have a quicker response time, then no. This latest PVA screen (2405FPW) is rated anywhere between 8ms-12ms, which means it is technically "faster" than the 2005FPW.
 
Both the 2005 and the 2405 are listed as 12ms. In the case of the 2405 though, I think it's an exaggeration. Reason for my skepticism? Well, simply put, it's a PVA panel. Even with overdrive technology, PVA's average response times are above that of IPS.

I would be willing to put money on the fact that the 2005 has a lower average response time, because IPS panels are better in that respect.

If Samsung made some MASSIVE technological breakthrough on the PVA front, driving their response time from their previous best of "20ms" to "8ms" they would certainly NOT debut it on a 24" $1000 Dell panel, they would start it at 17" and then move up.

That doesn't mean, however, that the 2405 is un-gamable. As you can see by the massive threads, most people are OK with it. As I said, though, the 19" 20ms Samsung panel is MUCH slower than LG's 19" 25ms IPS panel (as confirmed by many reviews and users on this forum). Take that as you will.
 
Point well made. But since I at one time owned both the 2005FPW and the 2405FPW, my own personal findings were different. Ghosting was ever-so-slightly more present on the former. It was mainly in general desktop usage that I could tell the difference, such as moving the white mouse cursor over a black background.

There are a lot of naysayers when it comes to comparing TN+ screens to IPS also. A friend of mine swears blindly that a 16ms TN Samsung screen he owns has noticeably less ghosting than the 2001FP and the 2005FPW that I used to own. He hasn't seen my latest screen yet though :p
 
Your friend is probably right. The TN panel has a lower average than the IPS as well.
As for the 2005... theoretically it should be faster, but I'd have to give the 2405 a try as well.

Nor myself. I am familiar with the technologies. That's why I dispute the fact that the 2405 is "faster" than the 2005 in the first place.

only thing i have to compare it with is an 1800fp and it looks better than that --- but my eyes can only see a small differernce - the 1800fp is meant to be 30ms i think !!
 
So is this the first PVA panel with such a low rated response time? I guess that was the point I was trying to make with this thread. I haven't really heard anyone even mention the fact that it was PVA. I guess this monitor is a good indication of what the upcoming 8ms Samsung PVA's will be like.
 
It's a PVA panel indeed and by the help of the overdrive technology PVA is now just as fast if not faster than a comparable IPS panel. Of course, an IPS panel with overdrive would be even faster. We'll have to wait and see how fast are 8ms PVA panels going to be.
 
As I said, I'm still quite skeptical of this "overdrive PVA" stuff... Physically, the PVA panels are slower than all the rest, so it's hard to understand how "all of a sudden" they're faster or as fast as the rest. Usually this technology stuff takes years to form... Not from 25ms to 8.

That's why there is overdrive. The panel itself is the same but the overdrive circuit is added to speed up the grey to grey response time.

Think about it. In regular PVA panel, black to white reponse time is the fastest because the highest voltage is being applied. The problem begins when you have to make transition between two close shades of gray. The liquid crystals have to turn fewer degrees but because of a lower voltage, their rotational speed is much lower too.

That's where overdrive comes in. Imagine if for grey to grey transition, it applied the same voltage as for black to white and then at a given time came back to the original voltage. That would make a huge difference in response time. That's why PVA panels now can compete with IPS and TN for gaming. TN with overdrive will probably be faster but not everyone is willing to sacrifice colors, viewing angles and contrast.
