2400/266fsb OC question

might seem like a stupid question
i want to purchase a 2400xp with a 266fsb. now, if i were to get pc2700 (333mhz memory) could i effectively swap the cpu in, jump the fsb to 166 right away, and have an instant 2.49ghz oc running?
i guess what my real question is, is pc2700 memory backwards compatible into a board that natively runs pc2100? when i first boot it, it will run itself normally at 133 untill i kick it up right?
is the 2400xp capable of hitting 2.49ghz just like that?

edit: oh and i dont expect it to do it on the stock voltage right?
 
No, even though your ram may support those speeds, you cannot make that huge FSB jump.

What motherboard do you have, and what ram? Also, what kind of cooling? Your ram may work, but I'm not sure. More information please, then we can help.
 
im running a gigabyte 7dxr mobo
im using a thermaltake sk6 + 60mm fan

i dont understand, its not a huge jump, only 33mhz on the fsb, if the ram can support it, what can possibly hold me back?

edit: just to make it clear what im currently running

that should keep it clear
 
Well, you might be able to, but you'd be doing a lot of overclocking. That chipset does 133 mhz fsb and 166 mhz might not seem like a huge jump but you probably can't do it. As far as I know, it was the Via chipsets that could get to 166 mhz and that's why they were more popular, but all that was a bit before I knew much about computers. Then there's the problem of the 2400+ going straight to 2500 mhz, it will need a lot of voltage if it can even do that speed.

Your chipset would be what is holding you back. That motherboard is sort of old, so I'm not sure if it could support new ram, it might be sort of a hit or miss thing.

It's hard to say...if you can unlock the cpu you'll have a lot of luck I'd say as long as you have good cooling. If you can't unlock it, it will depend on your chipset. Hopefully it has dividers so you can overclock the FSB without touching the PCI/AGP buses. If not, you may want a new motherboard.
 
ok, in that case, what is the best bang for the buck cpu that is socket a, 266fsb, and tbred core? 2400 im guessin?
 
Yeah, the 2400+ fits all those requirements. That would be a nice upgrade, but overall your system is still sort of a clunker, have you thought about saving your money more and getting a new system or is that not an option?
 
because the only game i cannot play well is doom3, i want to make a moderate upgrade. i know what i could really use to get me up to par is a new mobo, cpu, and ram, but i cannot justify that upgrade if i really dont need it, being that the majority of the games i DO play run great
i will pick the 2400 up tommorow, borrow some pc2700 ram from a freind, and see what i can do
if i am still unsatisfied, i think i will return the 2400 for a 2500 barton, and get new mobo and ram too, but i think the 2400 will be able to hold me over

in the meantime, is there certain 2400's to look out for, or are they all tbred b's?
 
All 2400+'s are throughbred b's, though there are mobile 2400+'s that are a little more expensive but you can multiplier overclock, which would work well for you if you can't get a good FSB overclock.
