I've pretty much decided on trading my dual 17" screens and my 24" TV for a Dell 2405FPW. However, I've noticed I really use the dual screens a lot, so now I'm having second thoughts. The numbers of pixels is about the same (2621440 to 2304000) with the dual screens having a slight advantage.

Which would you chose and why?

At work I'd get the dual screens since more screeen space would be better for programming. For home I'd rather have the 24" LCD. The dual 17" screens would be a little better for programming, but not enough to make up for the superiority of a 24" for gaming. That's assuming that 24" has decent response times of course.
I've recently started using a 24" widescreen CRT as my main display at home, and I still find myself using the side screens a lot. Maybe a little less than when I had a 21" + 2x19" (current setup is 24" + 2x19"), but still a lot.

I used dual 19" CRT for about 3 years, ever since the first Matrox G400 came out... but once i got my 24" CRT, i completely stopped using dual monitors. Sure, the resolution isn't as large, but it's just so much easier to have two windows opened on the same screen, rather than 2 monitors. And in times when i don't need two screens opened at the same time, i can have one really big screen... great for things like large excel sheets, or gaming!

Get two 2001fps or 2005fps.

That's definitely much better than a single 24" panel. :)

thought about it, but if I'm going to spend $1k on monitors it means bye bye TV - and I want something bigger then 20" to watch movies on

I don't get it...
What's wrong with watching movies on your LCD?
If you get a 24in, that should be large enough for all your movie-watching? It's probably more future-proof that you can watch HD movie on that.
In fact, can you actually get a 20in HDTV with <$1000?

Many people these days are switching to LCD TVs anyway, it's not like once you connect your LCD to a computer, your enjoyment of watching movie on that will degrade?

ok, what I was trying to say was that in order to afford a 2405fpw or 2 x 2005fpw screens, I would need to sell my 24" TV

then I would be watching movies on the LCD screens, which is fine, but I want something bigger then 20" for watching movies - which is why I'll be getting the 2405fpw

also due to the fact the 2005fpw doesn't have component in, don't even know if it has s video in, for that matter

okay, guess i didn't read your top post carefully :p

anyway, i'd say 2405fpw is a good choice.
If your current TV is not 16:9, you'd actually get bigger "real" image when you watch movies.

I believe 2405fpw has component input. The specs are already released.

it's not, it's a crappy 4:3 tube set

yes, I know - that's why I must have it :D
