is it nessacary to use an adapter in apposed to letting it hang off......the adapter is ugly

24 to 20 pin?

if you have clearance on the mobo, yes, you can let the right-four pins hang off the mobo. I've got mine running that way since PCP&C didnt return all my accessories from my RMA (I'm still bitter... its a $3 adapter, but its the PRINCIPLE dammitt!! )
