Hi guys,
I'm looking for suggestions for 24" LCD monitors. I know there are individual threads for each of these monitors (or at least the dell/benq), but the threads are so long I'm having trouble locating a big review (and I'm not sure what information I should be looking for with the search option anyway). I've been doing some research lately and narrowed it down to a couple of models--Dell's 2407WFP, BenQ FP241W, Samsung's 244t and HP's LP2465. Hardly a "narrowing", but I thought I would mention the ones I'm considering.

Now, the prices are all over the board, so which ones are most cost effective? The BenQ has HDMI, which would be useful if I ever wanted some 1080p play for my PS3 (as the plasma downstairs isn't that high res), but from the looks of the benq thread the monitor only does 1080i via hdmi (although it seemed like people had a hard time finding a 1080p source, so I was a little confused)... Can anyone confirm? Also, I found a lower local price on the Dell (around $600, no tax/shipping), so that seems to be the cheapest/best deal so far. Money is somewhat of a factor, so unless that Samsung is godly beyond all belief, I probably won't consider it.

What about the panel types (PVA, IPS-S, etc)--which ones are the best for movies/colors, and which ones are the sharpest? At first I planned on getting two 20" (1600x1200) monitors, but now it seems like a 24" would be a solid combination to give me more desktop space than a standard monitor so I can work, but maintain a good feel for any movies/shows I watch on it. Do any of you 1900x1200 owners find it's not wide enough for two documents/websites at a time?

Any and all input is welcome!

Btw Dell Ultra sharp 2407WFP are having huge discounts in my country. Is it because it is crap or is it because new revisions are coming and they want to get rid of older problematic versions to unwise customers? I never knew that buying LCD would be such a headache!

I think the A03 has been relatively mistake free, but there are problems with all of the LCDs out right now (hence my dilemma).

Is the dell 8 bit?

the samsungs have horrible input lag, the dell's colors are meh at best, i settled on the benq 241W myself because it seemed like the best 24" panel out there right now and the difference between the panels are in the sticky at the top.

Hope that helped.

I'm literally about to buy a 24 in too but I still cannot decide between these 3:

Gateway FPD2485W - S-PVA panel similar to Dell. Ability to go to Best Buy and hand pick revision as well as exchange a lemon at a brick and mortar store is pretty tempting.

Dell 2407wfp A04 - Similar to Gateway in quality. Good service and 3 yr warrenty. Seems pretty painless to exchange in the mail if I get a lemon.

BenQ fp241wz - Possibly the best panel of the 3 but most expensive. Some questions about the AMA-Z/BFI tech in the behardware.com preview. Difficult to exchange if I get a lemon because must order online. Difficult to deal with warrenty issues?

I can't decide, any opinions?

HI,

I've the Dell. My system is HTPC oriented, so I watch plenty of DVDs on it. Proper calibration and FFDshow etc. yields a tremendous picture. I love it.

As to documents/websites, this display is certainly sufficient for viewing two simultaneously.

I know this is for 24", but for a 1" difference, why not consider the Apple Cinema 23"? I had a Dell 2405, but I sold it to my roommate.

I got an extra Dell 20.1" to join with my other one, and am addicted to dual monitor setups. I am considering a dual 24" or dual 23" setup since I miss the real estate and res on the 24". An Apple 23" can be had with an education discount for $850. It is Nvidia XHD compliant, but they are lacking in certain respects. There always seem to be trade-offs.

Supposedly new Apple Cinemas are supposed to be HDCP compliant and have hdmi connectors. I would be very vigilant and analytical. Connections are moving to hdmi or udi. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray wars are not hashed out, and HDCP enables full playback support for these formats. But to be honest, this is not my forte, and I am still trying to sift through the opaqueness of this area.

You may want to hold off until you see what is going to be the dominant format and connection so your gpu, monitor and drives will enable you to enjoy high def, and for all intensive purposes be future proof as can be.

I know the 2407 is HDCP compliant, so I'm good in that respect. I think because I can get it so cheap ($600) I should probably stick with it and save the $150-200 and put it towards something else.

I bought a DVI-HDMI cable off monoprice a few weeks ago... does anyone know if it goes both ways (so I can output my PS3 in HDMI and input that into the dell)?

for higher quality, go with a NEC MultiSync.

My LCD2690WUXi has been the best buy of my life!

So it's a bit larger than 24", you will not regret it. I don't see the dot pitch. Colours are absolutely amazing, and switch/speed/refresh rates have not been an issue for any game or movie I've seen on it yet.

I ended up getting the 2407 A04 b/c the price was too good to pass up. Thanks for the suggestions though guys!

Is the LG L245WP-BN worth considering? I have the option of buying either a Dell 2407WFP A04 for 750€ shipped or a LG L245WP-BN for 800€, but I'm not sure which to get.

I read the Dell has broken component input and your lucky if you get a non-faulty monitor. On the the other hand I've found no discussion or reviews of the LG, in fact the only thing I found was a LG press release about the "new LG L246WP", but I couldn't find any real information on the L246WP either. Apparently it's a P-MVA panel though, which from what I've read is worse than the Dell's S-PVA?

The BenQ FP241W is currently priced at 1000€, so I can't even consider it. Are there any release dates set for the Samsung 245T or ViewSonic's 24" or any price drops coming for the BenQ here in Europe?

Samsung should be next month, if all the info was real. But who knows if it will be a good monitor...

where is this info come from? Is there a link? Because I want to know if the 305T is releasing at the same time?
