Hi to all,
Been lurking here a while, and finally bought a 24 bay Norco/Logic-case chassis.
I work as a Sys Admin, so I am pretty familiar with RAID 0,1,5,6 etc but never built my own until now.
Before Xmas I bought the case, transferred my drives over, built a RAID 5 3 disc and began to expand the machine. I screwed up lost data and learnt some important lessons from this.
I have 3 x lsi megaraid 8708em2 which I have running on an Asus Sabretooth 990fx board. I am using windows because the server itself hosts a load of things specific to windows, plus a mumur server, plex, etc
Because I have found out that 2TB limit is imposed on these cards I have looked into a solution for a better RAID system.
This lead me to buy a SAS expander and an HP P410. I then found out that the P410 doesnt boot on my motherboard, I get the initializing screen and then nothing. Changing the option ROM and other PCIe related settings have done nothing to alieviate this, so back it goes!
I have now bought an LSI 9211-8i which I am waiting on delivery for. But I see this is an HBA not a true RAID card, so RAID 5 is off the table.
One solution is to use Storage spaces to create the data pool, which makes sense and looks like it could be viable for me. Write speed is not too critical and will be on a UPS eventually (I've seen the UPS spoof hack for it)
Now I have 16 x 1TB drives, 3 x 160 Gb, 2x 2TB a 250 GB and 500 GB. My OS and VM's are on a 128GB SSD loaded with windows 10 and VMWorkstation 11 connected to the SATA 1 (0?) port on the motherboard - no raid or anything fancy, I backup the OS and VM's on a weekly basis to a separate networked PC.
What would people suggest I use with this? I planned on using the 16x1TB to make a large pool, but I found that it can use discs of different sizes? What is the limitation of this?
Do I just create the discs as RAID 0 in the controller and point them to storage spaces and let it do its thing?
Makes me want an HP board just so I can use the P410!!!!
