A few years, retiring my CRT and decided that flatscreens would be a good purchase I picked up

A samsung 2493HM 24"

A nice flatscreen for its time.

I do have certain visual concerns, namely mild keratoconus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratoconus) which makes reading low contrast text or muted pallets (the grey on grey slider bar on Chrome for example is near impossible to see casually) an issue; colour vibrancy and contrast are important. My rig is mostly gaming related and browsing.

I've considered upsizing to a 27" with the 1900x1080/1200 resolution for reading and larger image (no real estate concerns). Going dual monitor is possible using a new 27" and the 2493 together, or another 24" for a much lower price. I've done a few checks on Newegg and other sites but find myself trying to find the value.

Have there really been any big changes?

The Asus models seems to be very well recommeded in the 24" and 27" sizes on Newegg. Is there anything else that I should be looking for

You should be good with the Asus monitors. They have a "Splendid" function that lets you choose between 4 or so presets. If you need help with contrast, theater and vivid modes should help you out.

There's also the VE278Q, which is the LED version of the 276Q. Its blacks and colors are a little better, but reportedly not a major difference.
