Ok so I have read through and there are alot of threads on a specific screen and peoples thoughts... I have a different question..

I currently use a Compaq P1610 (24" crt) running at 1920x1280

Built a new rig in my sig.. and did some OT the last 2 weeks so I have some money to spend... $600 is my definite max (including shipping)

2 reasons why I want one of the sizes in the title...

1. I already have a 24" so dont want to go smaller
2. 22" and smaller monitors seem to only do 1600 resolution...

now I was looking at 24's but after reading here I see that some people didnt pay that much more for a 28".....
It looks to me that 30+" is where you will get the 25xx resolution and their prices are out of my range!!!!!

so what monitor do you recommend in
24"
26"
28"

we play COD4, R6V1, R6V2, GRAW1, GRAW2 currently......

Thanks

well for 28" im looking at HF-289HJB now...

going to go to BB today to look...
so far I have read that TN panels suck as you have to sit in front of it... and that is what im going to do anyway so that doesnt bother me

My old Samsung 214T has me spoiled. I was at Best Buy last week looking at 24" panels, most of them were TN and had very narrow view angles before the colors went all screwy.

Not sure I'd be too assured of those first two panels going by the reviews of them.

Well, since it looks like you are after TN panels in all cases, I'd say the real question comes down to how big you want the pixels to be. All the screens are the same rez, so the bigger you get, the bigger the pixels will be.

In all cases they should be bigger than your 24" CRT since CRTs measure tube size, not display size. They 24" screen will have pixels slightly smaller than a 22" LCD, the 26" screen will have pixels just a touch larger than a 22".

Personally, I think 26" is about the sweet spot, that's what I got. I had a 24" and the pixels were just a little too small, could make small things hard to read. With the 26" it's easy on the eyes, but still small enough I don't see a screen door effect or anything.

As for TN panels the thing to consider isn't that you have to sit in front of them. It is that the greater an angle you are to the display, the more off the colour is and the more the contrast ratio drops. Now the reason you'd care when sitting in front of it is of course you are only looking straight at the centre. The edges are at an angle. In the case of large LCDs, they can be a pretty significant angle. Thus the display will look different in different places.

At work I have a 22" TN panel and there is a noticeable colour shift from top to bottom. It isn't a "Oh my god this is so awful," sort of thing, but I can certainly see it. That's not the case with the 26" IPS panel I have at home. It looks consistent across the whole display.

However, if you want cheap, TN is what you've got to get. Any other technology bumps the price by a non-trivial amount. As an example a DoubleSight DS-263N, which is the cheapest 26" IPS monitor I'm aware of, is nearly $700 instead of the $400 you are looking at for the Westinghouse.

So unless your budget goes a bit higher, you'll need to stick with TN panels.

WOW yeah that summed up a few things for me...

i too figure 24" is too small... and wasnt sure if 28" was too big... so yeah im thinking 26" now....
so now I have to read reviews on the westinghouse to see if they are ok....

I was also trying to figure out this exact same problem a couple weeks ago when I built my new rig. I was really considering the westinghouse at 25.5 and the hanns g at 28". I ended up going with the hanns g 28" for the sheer price to size ratio, and have to say I am pleased with it. Just wondering if anyone here owns a westinghouse 25.5" and could give some input on that monitor. I am not sure whether I think the hanns g 28" is too big, or if I like it because its so big. I am thinking that maybe 25.5" would have been the perfect choice.

I would say go with the 24''

well i never bought that monitor... seemed that credit cards and gas in the tank was needed!!! :D

so anyway... back at looking at monitors...

im liking the asus...
anyone know anything of it?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236033

$440 - $20 MIR plus free shipping!!!!

also a side note... I dont uderstand the contrast deal...

I see some have 800 and some with 1000 and some with 4000?????

also response time... since I game I know I need a good response time...
2ms seems good but why do some say 2ms and some say 2ms(GTG) ???

also the asus says 1000:1 (ASCR 3000:1) for brightness... WTF!!!!!! ASCR????
