Will the Highpoint RocketRAID 2320 work in a 1x PCIe slot? What's the speed difference on a 2220 in a PCI vs. PCI-X slot? I'm trying to avoid buying a new motherboard just for another PCI-X or another PCIe slot.

A 1x card works in a 4x or 16x slot, but not the other way around, as a 4x card is physically larger than a 1x slot afaik.

Yeah, lookin' at the pics, that's what I'm seeing too... It's just not what I WANT to see.

There was an article floating around that tested video cards in 1x, 4x, and 8x slots in comparison to using 16x slots. It worked...I don't see why this wouldn't. Of course you might have to cut the back off the 1x slot on the motherboard to make the card fit.

This sounds interesting. Anyone have a link?

Some motherboards have an open-ended pci-e x1 slot that makes modding unnecessary. Just FYI. Here's one that has the open-ended thing; although it's an open x4 slot, it's the same concept. You get the idea :p

technicaly it will work, even if you have the notch to fit the larger card you will lose the performance and its a hit and miss whether it will work or not. Dont expect support either if you have problems, theres no point in wasting your money on a high-end RAID card and to risk wrecking your hardware.

Also, all PCI-E endpoint devices are required to support x1 mode. So as long as the device is actually compliant with the spec, it will work. We also have some adapters sitting around that let us plug wider cards into narrow slots, but they raise the card about half an inch, so it's not feasible to use them outside of a test environment.

A x1 PCI-E card can transfer data at 250MB/s in both directions. That's almost twice as fast as conventional PCI, but quite a bit slower than the fastest PCI-X modes.
