22 or LCD with 8bit panel

Just a couple of questions...

1. Are there any 22 inch wide screen LCDs that use an 8bit panel, or are they all TN panels?

2. Recently picked up a Samsung 225BW but certain aspects of it I'm not 100% happy with and I'm looking at some 24 inch panels. As an example, between the HP LP2465 & the LG L245WP-BN, which would be the better choice? And since I'm going to assume the answer is the LG L245WP-BN; how much worse is the HP LP2465?

I'm aware there are other choices. Some cheaper and some more expansive. I chose these two because they fall somewhere where in the middle AND happen to have height adjustment.

1. They're all TN panels, except for one highly expensive Eizo.

2. I don't know about the LG's. Most 24" monitors in the $600-$700 range are S-PVA's. The BenQ 24" in that price bracket is a P-MVA. 24" TN's are starting to show up at lower price points.
 
The HP LP2465 is quite an old panel and picture quality is not as good. It has banding issues apparently. The LG has much better feedback, so does the Dell 2407 which has new backlight technology ofr a wider gamut. S-PVA panels are pretty impressive nowadays, and you probably cannot tell the difference from a IPS panel.

Nothing much has been said about the performanc eof the 24" TN panels except the price point.

I agree that the average consumer (the people buying up all the TN's) would be fine with an S-PVA. If you do any graphics work or play any games with dark settings, however, you might want to avoid S-PVA. The black crush and color shifting of S-PVA bothers me very much.

How does P-MVA compare?
 
There's still some color shifting on P-MVA, but its less severe.
 
I picked up an LG246wpbn a few days ago, I am extremely happy with it, congrats on your purchase im sure you will enjoy this monitor, after days of fiddling around I am using the RGB setting for color/contrast/brightness, brightness set to 40 or so and everything looks great, out of the box settings I turned brightness under USER to 50 and contrast to 80 and battlefield 2 looked very dark, too dark to play, anyhow after setting the panel to use the RGB setting, EVERYTHING looks great. Blacks are very deep, light leakage is minimal and even, no input lag problems, no ghosting problems ( yes I know many will say it's there on any lcd, but I dont notice it at all). PLUS the monitor stand has HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT, which for me is a must have. I am running the panel at 1280x960 I find this setting to be most comfortable for viewing web and windows and works just fine in games as well, I find 1920x1200 to be way to high a resolution as everything ( windows, text, webpages etc.) to be way to small even for my 20/20 vision although the max resolution is great if you are just viewing a picture. My point here is that the monitor does look good at certain lower resolution settings.
 
Got the LG L245WP today. Damn what a sweet looking monitor. Light years ahead from the Samsung TN panel monitor I'm returning. even though this is a 24 inch and the Samsung was a 22; this just seems so much bigger. Thankfully no dead pixels I could find. of course I'd expect no less for the price.

Next step, calibration. Right now looking at a white screen is like looking into the sun. :)

if you find the text too small to read, you should change the Windows default font size to "large" or "extra large". dont mess with the resolution other than native in LCD, as the pixel layout on LCD is fixed, unlike CRT which can use multiple color trio--RGB phosphor to represent a single pixel, LCD color trio will only display one pixel.

when display in non-native resolution, either the graphic card or the monitor will take the smaller picture and resize it to the native pixel layout on LCD. try resizing a picture 1280x960 to 1920x1200 on image editor and see the result.

The HP panels is quite old, I do not think it is HDCP compliant and therefore not a good consideration, THE LG246wpbn is a great monitor, I own it and love it. The LG would definitely be the better choice here.

My monitor delivers very good quality at non native resolutions, though I may try increasing text size and run something higher like 1680x1050. Native is a bit of a chore even for my 8800 gts.

I dont have a calibrator, I found that using the SRGB setting in the monitors menu with a brightness of 30 gives me exactly what I was looking for and I am quite satisfied with this setting, the LCD now runs ALOT cooler than it did when I had my brightness set in the 60's to 70's range. Anyhow, the picture is perfect for me at this setting. The screen is quite bright without being blinding.

thanks for the input, I will try some other text settings then try some higher resolutions and native with my panel.
 
I made a post earlier looking at the differences between the HP w2207 (TN) and my old Dell FPV1704 (PVA). Here it is:

Kinda poorly-written, but I think it shows some of the less-talked about shortcomings of TN panels.


TN panels do have some shortcomings but I never found the colors to be bad on my samsung TN panels. They do have the advantage of faster response and viewing angles are NOT that bad for basic use and looking head on, now if you are going to view a dvd or something where you are not sitting in front of the monitor then yes the viewing angle can be a problem but otherwise no. Now if you are coming from an LCD that has a higher quality panel like an SPVA, SIPS or PMVA then yes you are not going to like a TN panel very much at all.
