22" displays, are they good?

What do you want to know about them. Please be more specific with your question so you don't come across as an idiotic nub.

...Um, if it's an LCD and is using a DVI connection, I have no qualms with using 19" or 22" flat panel monitors...

?

22" monitors are TN film monitors that have all the properties of other TN film monitors. If you know how 19" TN film monitors look, then just imagine the same monitor, except as a 1680x1050 22" widescreen. I suggest going to a local Best Buy / Circuit City / Frys if you live in the US and check them out in person.

They are fairly quick in terms of response time and ghosting.

The do not have a lot of frills or inputs or fancy features, this is a value segment. Most of them don't have the pivot / rotate feature, not all of them have adjustable stands.

They don't seem to have as much color dithering as "old" TN film monitors, there has been some discussion of whether these are true 8 bit / color panels - whether they are or not, they do better in terms of color range than older TN film monitors.

Vertical viewing angle is still very poor. If you slouch in your chair and sit up straight, for example, you can see the color changes. It almost looks like glare, except it's not. Some people are not bothered by this at all, others are. All LCD monitors suffer this to some extent except S-IPS panels are the best, followed by P-MVA and S-PVA then other technologies. TN film is pretty bad although better than it used to be in the bad old days.

What else do you need to know? I suggest searching threads regarding specific models.

LG just announced their 22" model with a "3000:1 contrast ratio" (dynamic contrast, real contrast will be lower).

ok i'm crt 21" trinitron user and had crts before this never lcds. today i went with friend to buy him a lcd and here's my experience.

we got 19" 931bf samsung wich is TN panel 2ms, 2000:1 dynamic contrast, 300 brightness and 160° angles i think.

from what i read on this forums new TN panels are not that bad so i had some expectations knowing it's still a lcd. When u see 160° angles spec on TN lcd go away from it unless u wanna be sitting strictly straight looking to screen otherwise colors change alot.

Deep blacks ? On 931BF there are no black colors .. i doubt it's MUCH better on other LCDs but who knows, never tryed them so can't tell from my own expirience.

2ms response time ?
I play Quakeworld wich didn't run for some reasone on friends machine so we fired up Q3. Ghosts alot if u ask me.. but ghosting is like monion blur kinda , with 2ms i think it can be acceptable, but real problem is refresh rate of monitor wich was set to 75hz. Weither u enable or disable vsync or mess with maxfps u cant get Q3 physics to act or run how its supposed to run with 85+ Hz CRT screens. I would sux definetley if i played fast FPS like Quake 1 - 2 - 3 serial on LCD, and definitley would not be enjoyable experience for me. Perhaps i'm talking about input lag ? Not sure, just it's not right, and not playable for me although this is 2ms fastest lcd today .. ;(

All colors look unnatural, definitley u need color calibrator and then i bet its another story with this. Backlight is acceptable when u go sub 20 in osd. Contrast on 50 max and u get kinda acceptable image.

And one strange thing about banding. Dithering and banding is visible on this monitor. If u use 32bpp (wich all use nowdays i guess) u can see it on quality photos wich have color transfomations and there was dithering in Quake3 visible ( textures and color was at 32bpp ).

Anyway, after months reading about LCDs and with all this new 22" TN panels all going so cheap i was really tempted to switch from 21" Trinitron but now when i tryed it i say noway i'm buying one. I doubt 22" TN panels are much better than this.

BTW, this monitor had no backlight bleeding at all wich was good thing i guess :)
