Anyone on here using Server 2012 & hyper v ? How you liking it ? (I'm pretty sure it's still in beta right now ) but hows things going with it ? How are you managing it ? RDP ?

I tried out Server 2012, They push you to install one GUI server and the rest Core... you can manage all the servers from the GUI server. I enjoyed it.

So you install the os, then run a client on a workstation ?

Id probably install both, because I like RDP

I used RDCM for all my RDP things.
 
I have one 2008 R2 server host running hyper-V with 5 VMs on it.

Two of those are Server 2012, One is Hyper-V Server Core 2012 Beta. As soon as August 15th is here I 'll be trying out the real deal.

My goal is to replace the host with Hyper-V Core 2012 + VTutilities + Core Configurator + Altaro Hyper-V (to back up my VMs) by this November.

Id like to try 2012 with Hyper-V i just put it in a vm on xen, but that didn't go to well. It has a error then reboots, a nice pretty error :) but yeah.

I have 2008r2 also but i'm only allowed 32gigs ram max :( id like to stuff 64gigs into my box and go from there. I'm at 24gigs but running out very easy, before I do things I have to turn off vm's and my exchange is in a vm, witch I refuse to turn off.
 
Been running server 2012 as my hyperV host for like 4 months now. It has been up for 90+ days straight with no issues yet, running 6-8 VMs.
 
I'm running 2012 with a couple 2012 hosts. No issues whatsoever. Runs awesome. It took a bit to find everything and get used to, but it's been alright. One thing that annoys the crap out of me is trying to get the start menu in an RDP session and you keep getting the host computer's start thing popup.
 
I ran the heaven benchmark and 3dmark on server 2012 with hyper-v enabled and disabled and didn't see a performance difference. so apparently the windows hypervisor architecture is very mature right now... very impressive to me. I don't think the linux systems are so mature.

I did not do the same test with a virtualized instance of server 2012 operated through remotefx. I hope and kind of expect the 3d video benchmarks would run well.
 
For those running 2012, is the OS compatibility better than 08? Will it actually boot BSD/Solaris/OS-X VMs now?

I believe that new versions of Linux will run on there without needing to dick around. If I'm not mistaken, the updated something in the kernel for it to work better. So it should work in R2 or 2012. I could be mistaken though.

That's just another reason to move to Hyper-V Server 2012. A Hyper-V 3.0 host can address 4TBs of RAM.
 
Will the new hyper-V server be free like the current one?




Just started playing with it (installing in VB as I type)....
 
Yes HV server will be free just like original and 2008 R2 versions, in addition W8 will include full HV as well including the ability to migrate VMs to and from other hosts. Theoretically if you had to do maint on your HV server you could live migrate all the VMs off to workstation PCs and not actually lose any VM downtime.
 
I'm about to try out Hyper-V 2012, anyone have links to some documentation and management tools?
 
I'm running Hyper-V Server 2012 RC on my new VM host and I'm really enjoying it. I can manage it from Windows 7 using the RSAT. I'll need to bring up a Win8 client at some point, as a couple of features need the Win8 version of the RSAT to manage, but they haven't been important so far.

Holy crap I love native LACP and native Jumbo Frames, big benefits of 2012 over 2008 R2.
 
I'm trying to connect Win Server 2012 to the Hyper-V Server 2012 so I can manage it, but I'm getting an error that it cannot find it (workgroup).

Is there a command I need to run on the Hyper-V server that will allow rsat to connect to it?
 
I have used vmware for a couple of years now, and wanted to try out hyperv 2012 but I have to say after i loaded up server 2012 I started to feel dumb... Is there a good walk through to setting up your first virtual machine?
 
If you're talking about the full win serv 2012 then first you have to install the hyper-v role, once that's done the hyper-v manager is under the tools drop down at top of server manager, from there it should be fairly self explanatory.

server 2012 is easy to use when you understand how they put a lot of the management into the server manager interface.

a whole lot of important stuff is NOT in that interface. but a lot of important stuff is. so you have to split your time between yet another collection of settings.

for instance, to manage disks fully, you need to use the disk management interface right? yes, but you also need to use the new disk management interface in the server manager. oops. same with hyper-v I think and probably a bunch of other stuff. there is hyper-v management in the server manager, and also hyper-v management in a separate hyper-v app in the control panel. oooops.
 
I've been running 4 HV hosts through beta, to RC and now RTM. PFsense has been the only challenge from a non-windows OS, ubuntu, a vyatta vm, and an xbmc live debian variant have all run without issue. the management console is pretty simple to learn, but powershell is where it's really at, imo.

i just demo'd remotefx to some people using an panasonic toughbook with an x86 procesor and 2 Gigs of DDR2 RAM, gpu was intel's old old 4 series stuff, the kind that rates like a 2.3 in windows 7 rating.

i hooked up to their projector, connected to the RemoteFX VM over a wifi tether to my iphone, so cellular throughput, and started the presentation. it was a short one; i simply launched a 1080p movie in wmp, paused it to make a call on 2013 lync (redirected audio / mic) and then opened a bunch of excel and word documents in rapid fire succession. then closed the vm, and launched TWO of the same docs on the host. that was the longest 10 seconds of silence ever.... point made. now imagine instead of an old toughbook, if that was your ipad, or hey.... how bout a $199 Surface? that's a game changer.
 
I have the same thoughts heuristik, but microsoft doesnt seem interested in taking advantage of the mature new virtualization, other than to let IT people tinker with it on servers. maybe they'd rather everyone be on THEIR cloud.

I would love to try a mature thin client solution with a home server. the tech is there, it's done! we could have thin clients of every shape and size performing all functions of a powerful server over ridiculous 11ac bandwidth. but consumer electronics is such a "disposable" market, nobody wants to create a product you don't need to throw away every year.
 
I think Microsoft has not been given enough credit for their contributions to home tech, especially when you consider how much of it has been on their own dime. XBOX --> XBMC, Kinect, Windows Media Center, and Windows Home Server are just a few that come to mind....

your thin client comment made me think about MultiPoint; can you imagine what would happen if they combined that with their Server Essentials solution? That would make for a very compelling home server product for sure.
 
I'm using Server 2012 Hyper-V for all of my home VM's since the Beta, then upgraded everything to RC. Just simple things like AD, DNS, file server, media server and a 5 or 6 Linux VM's, Nagios, web boxes.

I haven't had any issues, but I don't put too much load on mine. The new Metro/Win 8 styling has grown on me too.

that was the technet version right ?

I'm thinking about converting my xen box to 2012 hyper v, then i can manage it easier, instead of installing the client on all my machines.

Plus it's easier to backup :)

Not Technet, these were the public Beta and public Release Candidate.

And I've been considering trying out Xen, lol. Yeah, I manage it with RDP. It's a headless box sitting in my closet. I also want to try out System Center 2012 for management.

what is system center ? ( what's it do ? )
 
It does things like resource monitoring, managed software installations, remote installations, P2V, vm migrations, etc. depending on which software you're using.

Just install Hyper V 2012 and running great, but whats the best way to clone it onto a new Hard Drive. Also look at Raid Card, is there a list i should be looking at for 2012 version.
