2011 Macbook Pro Max Memory

OWC sells a 16GB kit ($1500???) for the MBP, but lists Apple's specs that state max RAM is 8GB.

Odd.

That's very affordable.
;) the question was what the max was not whether the price for maxing it out was worthwhile.

Apple's specs seem to be based on what apple will sell you not on what the hardware can actually support. If OWC say it will work i'd probablly take their word for it.

If Apple says the machine supports 8GB, but someone plugs in 16GB, what does that do to the warranty... and why would anyone pay $1500 for it? You could buy another 13" MBP for less. :p

You can always put the original ram back in before taking it in for service if you are worried about it but I doubt they would care.

It depends, if someone has an app that truely needs the ram and they care about portability they may consider $1500 worth paying. It isn't THAT much money in the grand scheme of things.

But to me the important thing is it is known to work. So if you buy the machine now you can be pretty sure of being able to upgrade to 16GB when the chips and hence the modules come down to a more reasonable price.

This is true. If you need it for work, 1500 isn't too much.

I've played with one of the OWC kits, they certainly work... For a great deal of money ;)

Nope ;) I've maxed out the 8gb in my 13" before but I usually hover in the 6.5 to 7gb used area.
