why wont my gateway 2000 detect my 200mhz mmx? it sees it as a 133mhz which what was in the system. i played with the multiplyer but the highest i could get the bios to show was 133mhz w/ the multiplyer set to RSVD(?).

there are no markings on teh motherboard to know what it is.

what can i do?

would it be better to fool with this or just run my 133mhz pentium? i cant remember if mmx was "good" or not. i'm going to setup this system as a linux file server.

On a lot of machines (may all machines...) of that vintage you had to set the multi. I know my old P200MMX has jumpers for multi and fsb. It's probably jumpered for a 133, so it runs your 200MMX as a 133MMX

i know thats the way they used to work. the only jumpers for the speed are the freq. multiplyers...i tried all 4 combonations and none of them worked out.

yes jumpers, and mmx is just another code in the processor to try and make the processor run better. It's "good" compared to not having it, in most cases, anyhow.
