Microsoft licensing is so confusing to me, I am setting up a new TS and need to make sure I get this all correct. So I have a couple of questions.

1. This server is going to be a member server on a 2003 domain, do I need CALs for the server in addition to the RDS CALs?

2. I know that Office requires a special version for terminal servers, where can I purchase one of these versions?

If you don't already have any 2008 CALs in your environment, then yes, you'll needs CALs for every user that touches the server.

You'll need Volume License keys for Office. If you have a local technology partner, contact them for the licensing. It'll be a Win-Win scenario. They'll get a sale and you'll make another contact you can draw on for local help.

Perfect, thank you guys for the help.

Now all I need to do is get setup with a reseller to get a VLA, I know you said to purchase this threw someone local, but can I get it threw Dell? That is who we are getting the server from.

Absolutely, but trust me on this one, the local guy will still be there when "Joe" the Dell tech in India hangs up the phone. Isn't good will of a local resource worth something? Just throwing out a thought...

This is for a client and I am not a Microsoft reseller, I am just don't want a competitor having access to my client.

While a valid point, I work with CDW quite often and have never really had issue with them. They get me what I need when I need it.

Aside from wanting to call and chat with me on every quote I request, in addition to emailing me, I'm happy with CDW.

Thanks, I will go with CDW.

What is the process for setting up a VLA? What info do they need from the client?

It is, essentially, a contract. But contact CDW, your rep will be able to answer that question more effectively than we can.

Bonus about CDW: They have MS licensing specialists onhand, so if you get in to some of the odder set ups ( MSSQL, SAs, multiplexing ) they can help you through it.

Ahhh... I guess I messed that in the OP. Yeah that would make a difference. CDW's a great vendor, and my latest team at Dell rocks also!

Thanks guys, I contacted CDW and they were great. No waiting on hold or anything.

How reasonable are they for their hardware prices for resell?

Dell uses Ingram Micro I believe, at least they did for a client of ours a few times.

We get about a 3-6% discount through CDW. It's similar to our Dell discount.
