I just received my new dell 2007wfp (s-ips) a couple of days ago, and since it's my first lcd, i have one question:
although very satisfied with color fidelity, sharpness etc, the one thing that's missing is BLACK. I mean especially in a totally dark room, there is not such a thing as total black i was used to by my crts. Instead i see some kind of dark purplish thing.
it's very homogenous, but still it's a bit purple which can get the magic out of some dark dvds and games.
Is it normal? How are other lcds -like the highly praised nec 20wgx2- doing in this area?
Anyways, i hope it grows in my as time goes by.

Unfortunately this is something you'd have to get used to and im having a difficult time myself, I bought a 20WMGX2 a little over a week ago and also experiencing the same 'lack of black' symptoms especially when playing games or watching movies in a darker room, plus I have my CRT sitting next to it which makes it even more obvious. At this point If I could only keep one monitor I'd go with the CRT but Im going to keep the LCD for web browsing and use the CRT for everything else.

thanx mathesar for your response.
At least now I know there's nothing wrong with the monitor. Everything else is excellent, far better then my CRT - which was quite quite good, of good quality- especially color fidelity is out of this world! Gradients test with photoshop are tremendous, smoother than many crts. My photos -i do a bit of photography- suddenly jumped out of the screen, but still, dark scenes suffered a bit.

First of all....if you have the brightness at default, TURN IT DOWN a few notches. Also, doing a good calibration will help to some degree...as well as using "desktop" instead of one of the other image modes. Current lcd technology simply isn't going to give you the same kind of black levels as crt...that's something you can get used to and live with however.

On the NEC I have brightness around 20% and contrast around 95%. AS-SIPS (NEC) is brighter than straight S-IPS so 20% isn't as low as it might sound to people used to using 40 - 50% on another monitor. Blacks have looked good to me since I got away from using mid-ranges. My Gateway CRT was never that black so I must have been using bad monitor because this LCD is blacker. I don't notice purple unless I am at an extreme angle (I not only have to move to the side but to the side AND up or down - so its on diagonal I get my sipsy eggplant - but I like it compared to the dirty pee yellow I see on the many of the panels in Best Buy).

My heart goes out to you too! I have always bought top of the line NEC & Iiamya CRT's over the years. I recently made the LCD jump after reading review after review of: "I made the jump to LCD and am I glad. This is way better than my old CRT!"

Now wish I had bought just one more top of the line CRT in the 22" or 24" range while they were still available.

Don't get me wrong as my new Gateway 24" LCD is a very fine monitor for the price and does a great job in many areas but the black level is still an issue. Black really only seem to be black when next to a much brighter color.

Anyone who has played games like Oblivion and explored the under ground ruins know how beautiful they are on a high quality CRT.

I am not saying price is no object but is there ANY LCD monitor out there that handels blacks best?

Or will we just have to wait to see what's next?

best

JMD

Obliviously if you are seeing purplish blacks, then you have received a 2007WFP with an S-IPS panel. Post this information in the Dell 2007WFP panel lottery thread and check how to find out more info of your panel.

As for the troubles, calibration my friend.

We will have to wait and see whats next but I dont think its going to be LCDs that offer the deep blacks we're after, hopefully SED / OLED monitors come out sometime in the next couple years. Ive got my 20WMGX2 calibrated and setup the way the majority recommends but its still very lacking in black level / shadow details when compared to my CRT, Everything else about the LCD is awesome.

So true. Unfortunately, I had to endure those areas on my Gateway FPD2185W S-PVA. It was frustrating at times. I hooked up my old Samsung 997DF CRT next to it one day to compare, and was further amazed at how much visual content I was missing in those dark areas.
