Revenue of more than $12.5 billion dollars helped the console industry break records in 2006. The official sales numbers from NPD for all three console makes are in and they vary greatly from previously reported numbers. The breakdown for December was:

Sony sold 687,300 PS3s according to the NPD Group's numbers. Meanwhile, the Wii became a hit, too, selling 1.1 million units. "Once you get people to try it, you see them light up," says Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan. Microsoft's Xbox 360 overcame its own supply problems by spring and sold 3.9 million units, pushing its installed base to 4.5 million in December outselling PS3 and Wii combined.

I was a bit shocked to see all the sales numbers that were previously released be so far off. I know the that numbers that hit the internet ealier this month claiming 4 million Wii, 1.5 million PS3 and 2 million Xbox 360s would be off, but I didn't know they'd be THIS FAR off.

i heard a rumor that MS actualy makes money on every console sold now, if thats true they made a small mint
 
XBOX360 sold more units, but I think the only reason it did was due to lack of supply of the other 2. I saw a LOT of people walking into stores and saying "Do you have any PS3's or Wii's? No? Ok, I'll take an xbox". XBOX360 has been out for a good 8 months, so theres PLENTY of supply.

Sounds like Wii is STILL selling out and hard to find. PS3, on the other hand, sold 3/5's of their supply.

Does anyone know how many Wii units were shipped?
 
NPD = North American EXTRAPOLATED numbers.

Does not account for Japan, Europe or others.

Wouldn't suprise me... usually no matter what you produce, your first few batches are always a money loss.

Just like lets say if they built a new ford focus factory for $500,000,000... that means that the first 500 cars produced would be at a loss of 1,000,000 per car.... more you produce the cheaper it gets untill you break bast your even point.

Yes, production costs have dropped enough, but if they start making the 360 w/ HDMI and include the larger HDD that might offset the decreased production costs.
