So I'm looking at purchasing the VD-Z3 (http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?option=content&task=blogcategory&id=67&Itemid=28) so I can hook my Xbox up to my 2005fpw.

My only concern is how my monitor will display 480p and 720p display modes? I tried adding a custom res of 1280x720, but when I switched to it my display was all smushed. Certainly not widescreen by any means either.

Does anyone have any experience with this piece of hardware and a 2005fpw? What can I expect my Xbox games to look like when using it?

It seems to be the best option with the 360 and a monitor is still the VGA cable that the 360 has. Skip the transcoder. Only use the trancoder if you want to connect a ps2, or GC to your monitor.

Also the 360 supports 1280x768 resolution which is 16:10 (I dunno if all the games will support this resolution however).

I happen to own a vd-z3 and a 2005 fpw and the results are okay. The biggest problem I have with the vd-z3 is that it does not support 480i, which means for the ps2 it requires plug swapping (so you can see what you're doing before turning on progressive scan). The picture comes out okay, I haven't experiemented with it enough as I just purchased it recently. God of War being the only widescreen/HD ps2 game I have on hand, and I haven't tested how DVD's look in progressive scan with it.

Hope this helps.

I'm not looking to use the 360 with it.. rather the original Xbox.

Images from the PS2 and a DVD come out really well actually (of course that depends on the quality of the movie as well). The only issue is that the image will be stretched vertically slightly, as movies will mostly be 16:9 whereas the monitor is 16:10. This is attained by using "stretch" as opposed to "aspect" in the menu.

I haven't tried the resolution you mentioned but I have used 1280x768 and that came out very well.

But isn't 720p equal to 1280x720? How would I end up playing a 720p game in 1280x768?

I noted 1280x768 because it's a 16:10 resolution.

I have had some slight difficulties in getting the VD-Z3 in displaying an analog signal on the digitial 2005fpw.

I'm sure someone else could explain this better, but from what I can gather the adjustments that the 2005fpw is capeable of doing don't always fit the bill. 720p I usually have to deal with either having it squished vertically, or stretched slightly vertically (from 16:9 to 16:10).

I'm a purist, I hate having to distort the original aspect ratio, but when done it doesn't look terrible, and that's as much as I can say. As noted the vertical difference is only 48 pixels but it is what it is.

For what the VD-Z3 is it "works" although not how I want it to all the time.
