2005FPW not working with DVI

Hi all,

Have just bought received my brand new 2005FPW.

Aside from pretty much unacceptable backlighting problems, I have a bigger problem that I can only get a picture when I connect to my Sparkle 6600GT via the VGA lead. When I connect from the DVI-I port on the GFX card to the DVI-D port on the screen using the supplied cable, turn the computer on, press the source key to DVI-D... nothing appears on the screen and after 10 seconds or so, the power light goes orange and the monitor goes to standby mode.

The picture quality via VGA is needless to say not what I was expecting from my new LCD screen. Anybody got any ideas how to fix this? Or do I stick it back in the box, get a new and hope that the next one responds to the DVI signal and has less of a backlight problem?

Call dell in regards to the DVI and backlight and get a new one sent pronto, don't even bothe wasting time troubleshooting it.
 
I have had 3 of those basta_ds and had the same problems with the older ones, is yours a Rev AO2?
 
It's a Rev A02, made in October 2005 (!) in UK. (I live in Germany),

I'm sending it back once, if the second one is no good I will swap it for a 20 or 21" 4:3 (don't know what model code that is with Dell).

I so want to get a good one, cos otherwise it's a thing of beauty.
 
Is your 6600GT an AGP part? This might explain it. There is a well known problem involving the AGP version of the 6600GT that prevents it from synchronizing properly with monitors through the DVI port.

I discovered this recently when a friend bought a 2405 and found he couldn't use DVI.
 
Yes, it is an AGP card. Damn. Is there a work around, BIOS patch, anything? Does it only affect 6600GT? I knew I was gonna end up regretting not waiting for PCIe boards to appear before upgrading last December...

You can maybe try your mobo BIOS but beyond that, your stuck im afraid.
 
No work around, I'm afraid. It only affected the 6600GT to my knowledge. I believe it is something to do with a mistake Nvidia made when bridging the card from PCI-E to AGP.

Unfortunately, your choices are either return the 2005FPW or buy a new video card.
 
Arse. Is this a 100% zero-compatibility problem, or if I get a replacement shipped, is there a chance I might get one that works? I assume from your friend's experience that it also affects the 2405. Does it affect all monitors, will I never get a DVI signal with any monitor? In that case I think Nvidia/Sparkle owe me a new graphics card!!! :mad:
 
Arse indeed. I believe this is a 100% zero compatibility problem. A replacement 2005FPW won't work, nor will any other DVI based LCD, as the problem lies in DVI, and not the monitor itself.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but as you seem pretty damn happy with the Dell (and who wouldn't be? Hehe), you might consider getting a replacement video card. I know it sucks, but it is the cheaper of the two options.
 
Yeah, but if I wanna go with a PCIe 6600GT (and if I don't, AGP options are getting limited it seems) it means new Mobo as well as new GFX card, and the damn things are not even a year old yet, and I have no other need or urge to upgrade. That said, I guess I should get a reasonable price on eBay for the bits I'm replacing so shouldn't lose too much financially.

I can't go back to a CRT now :cool:

yeah you need to run the thing in dvi to get the best quality. on vga it takes alot of tweaking to get it to look right and still in the end it doesnt. but with dvi you plug it in and are set to go.
