2005FPW, not impressed, yet

After building my first PC I wanted to finish the job by replacing my 5y/o Gateway 17" EVF 720 with something 'better'. After scouring many gaming and PC sites it seemed CRT's were going out of style, even for gaming. So I looked for the best LCD I could afford that had a good rep and decided on the Dell 2005FPW. Well, so far, to be honest I'm not that impressed. My games dont look right. Ive made all the adjustments video card wise (AA, AF, Trilinear this and that). Maybe I'm not used to playing games on an LCD or maybe I'm just too used to playing games on my CRT @ 1600x1200 72Hz with a .24 dot pitch. It just seemed sharper and smoother.

I've got this bitchen new and expensive widescreen LCD, how come I dont like it? Sure, it is a beautiful looking monitor, nice sharp and bright colors, but after getting all pumped up from reading all the hype, I'm a little let down.

Can someone with this monitor (seems like alot of you, thats why I bought it) help me, I must be doing something wrong. I would like to play at this monitors high resolution and widescreen but I'm not sure I'm setting up the conf.ini correctly to do so. My favorite game is IL2's Pacific Fighters, here is the conf.ini,

[window]
width=1280
height=768
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=0
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

How do you get a game to play in widescreen, high resolution that 'normaly' wouldn't (or wasn't designed to) run that way? What besides the width and height values do I need to change? Also I've read that I have to re-adjust the games FOV, is that something I need to add to the lines under [window]?

From what I have read, this monitor should be blowing my mind, so I gotta think I'm just missing something. Thanks for your help.

Just looking at those lines, that game is not running at the LCD's native resolution. Unlike CRT monitors, LCDs have difficultiy displaying anything outside of their native resolution, in this case, 1680x1050.

With a system like yours, I wouldn't expect this to be a problem. Not all games natively support wide screen monitors, but there's usually a way to get it to work. In FPS games you usually have to adjust the FoV.

Whats the native res on that bad boy... 1680*1050?

edit: yeah ok, so thats the first place to start.

@ Mike Armstrong: Are you "codeseven" on the widescreengamingforums?

I notice someone there posted pretty much the same question and it appears to have been addressed somewhat.

Hi Darknyt, yes, thats me, codeseven, been looking around for answers and figured a wide screen gaming site would have them. I tried what info I got on that Forum, but didn't get very far, so I wanted to post here and see what you guys think.

I have tried 1680x1050, but the FOV (especially in cockpit) is really limited and at that high res the video settings had to be turned down in order to view the water without corruption (water was all white, using the Beta 81.85's). Thats why the conf.ini shot shows 1280x768.

Also, at 1680x1050, the ingame menues are huge and are not centered so I can only see the upper left quarter of them, leaving a part of the left side of my monitor black. Is this due to me not changing the other settings in the conf.ini [window]?

Just noticed this at the Matrox Tech Forums,

[Pacific Fighters

1 - Edit conf.ini file in the game's root dir

width=2400
height=600
SaveAspect=1
Use3Renders=1

Thanks to Painkiller ]

I'll give it a try (@1980x1050 ofcoarse).

I don't think there's much you can do when the FOV messes up forcing resolutions the game wasnt (unfortunately) intended for :(

Yeah, not all games will support being "forced" to run in a widescreen format. Sim City 4 being an ideal bitch example. I can't get the Deluxe Edition to run at 1680x1050 for anything after following the WSGF guide(s), so I don't even play it. I kind of gave up after that.

That said, I really enjoy shooting people in the face in Q3 engine-based games. And I must say GTA:SA looks pretty good at 1680x1050.

FOV should be 106 or 107 degrees to get it to the "proper" 16:10 ratio. If you could break it down to 106.666... then it would be even more perfect but that's impossible. So, 106 or 107 is where you want to be.

If all else fails, run it at 1280x1024 1:1... you wont get widescreen, but you wont be scaling and it will fill up the most of your screen possible.

Your doing something wrong, if you had it right - even a hack - for what every game your playing - it would not cut of part of your HUD. It seems like maybe you have the NVidia or ATI set to 1680x1050 but the game is not. Go to widescreengaming and look for fixes. You need to reach 1:1 pxel maping and it sounds like your not geting there. Tell us what games your playing. Non native on lcd sucks. LCD's are about sharpness and vivid bright colors - not geting native 1:1 destroys all of it's strenths and it just looks blurry and like crap.

yes looking on the web there are many places to find good info on getting your games to run in widescreen, heck there is even a quake 2 patch to run in widescreen.

Yes, and i's all worth it to find the answers. Rrhomes makes an excellent point here, "Non native on lcd sucks. LCD's are about sharpness and vivid bright colors - not geting native 1:1 destroys all of it's strenths and it just looks blurry and like crap", using anything other than what your monitors native (optimal) res just doesn't look right.

PF will not scale sideways, only up and down. Nothing you do will make it do that. It's an engine limitation. I just hit the 1:1 res. scale on my monitor and run it in 1280x1024 or something. Remember that unless you always use the 1:1 aspect ration selection, resolutions other than 1680x1050 will look like crap.

If you search the UBI forums, there is a way to do wide screen, but it just chops off the to pof the view rahter than extending it to the side.

Besides, 1600x1200 on a 17 inch monitor will give you some really, really small pixels. If you're used to that, you'll have a hard time upgrading to anything on the market today.

Yeah, I was referring to the setting of the moniter itself... in its menu under image settings where it says scaling.

You set it to 1:1 it will only use the correct number of pixels for the image being sent to it.
