I'm considering getting a Dell Ultrasharp 2005fpw for use as my primary moniter replaceing a 19" crt. I got a chance to see this moniter at a local Compusa (actualy the 20" apple, based on the same lcd panel) and loved it. Lovely screen, nicely detailed and smoothly graduated colors make it very nice to look at.

I'm looking for people who are using one of these every day to let me know about their gaming experiences. How does the screen respond in high FPS games like UT2004 and CS:S. Ghosting a problems? How about explosions?

I'll drive it with a 6800 nu through the DVI interface.

I've been gaming on my 2005fpw for about 2 months now and I love it. Games look great and I don't even see a hint of ghosting. Absolutely no complaints.
 
Got my 2005fpw about a month ago... Its amazing. No dead pixels from what I can see, no ghosting. (I play WoW, CS:Source, Battlefield 2 Demo, HL2)

I too play all the big games on a 2005FPW, plays and feels awsome. The huge widescreen like blocks your perifial vision and "pulls" you into the game more, I think. I do have a dead pixel, it is near the top right. Luckily it is black, so very un-noticable. Took me a month to notice it in fact. 1 out of 1.5 million aint bad
 
I think I am one of those people that are extra sensitive to ghosting, and I see it but it doesn't bother me. I see it when I play HL2 and have the graphics up all the way (X850XTPE) and move the target (move mouse) left right while running. Everything seems to get a "bit" out of focus, sort of like a very tame version of the slowdown in BF2 (when a tank shoots next to your head). It actually adds to the game play in my experience.
I cant, as a human, focus on everything on the screen at once and the things that always stay in focus are the things in the center part of the screen, or so it seems. The screen projects the images almost exactly how I would see them in real life. I can see the sides of Gordon Freemans field of view while he is looking forward (presuming that the target is his center of focus), but in real life I would only be able to see forward.

I must also note that you have to look for it, I barely notice it when I am playing, and on less graphically perfect game like BF2 I have never noticed it. If I never heard of the term Ghosting, I would think that it is normal, that is if I wasn't looking for it in the first place.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that it is damn near impossible to see it unless your really frickin trying to see it. I had a friend over and pointed it out and after 5 minutes he said "I think I see it, but who would even notice something like that. You spend too much time analyizing your computer parts."

Another thing thats great about this monitor is the view angles. Being a widescreen its north/south angle is not much, or it gets a metallic shine to it. But you can move your head all the way to the side (175 degrees) and still see it. At 180 your actually looking at the side of the monitor and would not be able to see anything anyway.
 
Another thing, make sure you use DVI. I had this hooked up to a computer with AVG and it was good but you would have to hit the Auto Refresh button a few times a day. With DVI it doesn't even give you the button option and it is always in focus. Text and the like, especially in the center of the screen, would get out of focus and hitting that button would make things right.

Yummy, I can't wait to get one. I'm cleaning out my closet right now and putting the contents on Ebay. I've probably got to empty another box or three to be able to afford this screen, but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Anyone have experience buying these NIB from reputable ebay buyers? Is the warranty still in place as advertised?
 
I was worried that people would minimize any ghosting and such on this LCD due to fanaticism. I was making the jump from CRT to LCD so I was suitably nervous. I was worried that perhaps those that said this monitor was good for gaming were all average gamers. My fear was that average gamer comments may not have as high of a standard as higher-end gamers who really want every edge when hitting tiny targets fast-moving targets.

Now after owning and using the monitor for awhile, I can vouch that from a high-end player's perspective, this monitor is excellent for gaming. I did notice the same blurring effect mentioned in a previous post, but the blurring effect is minor and has a negligible effect on aim. Had no problem identifying and hitting my targets, if there was any real disadvantage involved, I'd have sold away the monitor ASAP.

As for the widescreen, there is only 1 widescreen resolution available and it's the native 1680x1050. You can't use a lower resolution with widescreen and have the monitor stretch it to fit(as far as I know, I'd love to be wrong). So far all the games that have offered widescreen play only offer it at 1680x1050. Your card had better be able to support this kind of resolution at the high-frame rates you want. Probably anything higher than a 6600gt'll do it.
 
you can stretch it. you can set any resolution and have it stretch in the monitor settings. it will be interpolating then and not look as nice though

regarding the side viewing angles, looking from complete edge and having crystal clear picture on lcd is incredible
 
just be warned, you might get some backlight bleeding on this lcd. Its minimal is quite a common problem. Doesnt bother me though, i dont play games that are dark anyways. And i hardly notice it on dvds.
 
any tips to minimize the backlight bleeding? or ways to correct it if I have a severe problem.
 
lol, 1) that's probably too good to be true and 2) if you want a chance I'd post in FS/FT.

Check hot deals EVERY DAY. I did for a few weeks and then a deal turned up and I got it for $397.
 
i actually know someone who might sell it for you. same guy who sold to me. pm me if you want his contact info.

but regarding backlight bleeding, theres really nothing you can do. its just happens in the manufacturing process and its the mfg's fault for poor quaility control.
