2005FPW and strange font behavior

I originally thought this was an issue with the LCD's anti-glare coating, but it is something much more bizarre.

Basically, if I use some monospaced "system" fonts in my IRC or Telnet windows (fonts like Fixedsys, Terminal), the font will ghost across the screen. This ghosting is only visible if there is a window or dialog box over top of the screen with the actual text. So, for example, you have mIRC running full-screen in the background and a Windows dialog box pops up over it. You'd see the ghosting on the dialog box.

This isn't a matter of window transparency, though it resembles that. It seems like text is showing THROUGH the dialog box on top of it. Only thing is, it doesn't ghost actual text, just... little vertical lines. Very weird. I would've noticed this with my FP1702 that the 2005FPW replaced, so this is something new.

Do the 2005FPWs choke with system/monospaced fonts? Or is this monitor defective? If I change fonts away from Fixedsys and use something like Verdana, there aren't any problems.

I am using the latest drivers for my ti4600 and the 2005, and am also using the DVI interface at the intended resolution (1680x1050). I've also tried tweaking the monitor settings... the only thing that clears this problem up is the "Zoom" feature, but then everything looks crummy when zoomed. Also doesn't show up on lower resolutions. This problem seems to only occur at the intended (max) resolution for the 2005.

The following is a simulation of what I am experiencing. It is VERY close to the actual effect. Unfortunately the effect cannot be captured in a screenshot. A digital camera taking a pic of the monitor screen might do it, but... this is close enough to demonstrate.

You can see a clip from a screen featuring paragraphs of text using the Fixedsys font (this is from a MUD/MUCK client). Over top of this screen is the green Steam menu. Almost any dialog box with a color other than white will show the effect. Small vertical lines will ghost across the dialog box as shown above. :(

Any thoughts? About the only thing I haven't tried is a video card newer than my Geforce4 ti4600.

I'd try a newer video card if you can, although I don't know that that's the problem. It doesn't seem like something that's a problem with the monitor itself.

Very strange indeed

This is a pretty common problem if you are using a VGA signal, and makes sense -- in that case, it's unlikely to be an issue with the monitor itself.

I can't imagine how it could possible on a DVI connection though, unless you are outtputting from a VGA connector first, then to the DVI, then to the screen (in which case you're still going to suffer these artifacts).

kinda looks like what my 9700pro was doing when it was overheating

The monitor cannot show transparent by itself.

It has to be because of interference or a bad gfx card.

Try with another gfx if possible, try other drivers, try checking the temperature of the gfx etc.

I have almost the exact same problem on my 2001FP. On my desktop, when I use Microsoft Reader, there are short verrtical transparent red bars extending across the length of the screen where the page selection menu is. First I though it was with my monitor. I tried both DVI and VGA ports and got the same problem. Then I tried connecting my laptop to the display and with the same settings, I no longer saw the issue.

The problem has to be with my desktop and its radeon 9700 pro video card unable to handle those vertical red bars NOT the display itself.

Actually...nevermind my last post. My laptop uses a Geforce2 Go. My desktop uses a Radeon 9700 pro.

When I open MS Reader on my laptop using the 2001FP, the lines return!

When I open a screenshot of MS Reader on my laptop using the 20001FP, no lines.

Ok can anyone explain this!? 3 cases there are lines. 1 case there isn't.

Maybe you have to play around with the display timings in your gfx card drivers?

One video card is a laptop video card geforce2 and the other is a desktop video card ATI Radeon and I still have these problems?

BTW...I don't have these problems on the laptop screen. Only the 2001FP.
