I can't decide. Here's my thinking. The 2405 is the overall better screen. But is it too big to game on. I game on a big tv, but how far do you have to sit back to comfortably view it. Also, how long until I need a graphic's upgrade. I'll be using a GTX in SFF, so sli isn't an option atm.
 
Nothing can every be too big to game on in my opinion. I've actually gotten used to the size of the 2405 and thought it was kind of small in games lately, it wasn't until I watched that c-net review vid and put my hand up to it for scale that I once again realized how incredibly massive it is.

The 2405FPW scales 1680x1050 resolution nicely. I'm not the most hardcore gamer but I can play most games either 1920x1080 with high settings and low to no AA settings with my 6800GT, the ones that are slow at that res I drop to 1680x1050 and I can't tell the difference honestly.

I think you should know it's really a matter of personal opinion on screen size.

For me personally, I don't have 20/20 and I'm far from being in my teens or 20's. My eyes just don't handle that big of a screen for a computer monitor for daily use. I like to keep it to 20" because 24" just overpowers my vision.

This is not a problem for me with much bigger screens above 24" for video games with the XBox or PS2 because I game from at least 5-10 feet back from the display (depending on size). But you may want to consider like myself looking at a large display as close as your monitor will be and take that size into consideration.

Also, I do game on my computer, but I also do a lot of web design and 3D art (like Poser, 3DMax, etc.) Those programs, while will work, were not made for widescreen use so you should take that into account if buying and using a software package designed for 4:3 use.

wow, you are my hero. I have been trying to buy the 2405 and 2005 fpw. I' ve been calling dell and spoke with them and the lowest they would go is like 960 for the 2405 and 499 shipped for the 2005 fpw.

Could you tell me your secret, and don't leave out any details. Help a brother out. lol
 
The 20" is better for gaming since you can have a good balance of a high resolution and AA/AF.
 
i had the same dilemna...

but chose the 2005fpw becuz my desk can't fit the 2405fpw (becuz my rig is on the desk too, i mean, the rig has a case window, not showing it off is a crime!)...

though a year from now i do plan to get a bigger desk, and upgrade to 2405fpw...

then ill another GTX to power it

Already posted how I did it on the forum and a few people got it for similar to my price. It's been 3 weeks and I dont think the offer remains. Basically, I stacked 3 coupons that werent meant to be stacked by talking to multiple good and nice reps.
 
I have both these monitors and there are BOTH excellent.

The 20" is plenty big enough. The 2405 is better of course but not by much, really as the are both so fine.

One thing, the 2005 has a better viewing angle (minor issue) but it's blacks are not as good (but contrast is fantastic)

If your the type that deep down wnats the best ,and will be a bit restless about it, (like me) better to get the 2405 right off (save you some time) ;)

One VERY imprtant issue though. If you ever plan on getting HD cable or dish (this is the future of TV), you can use the 2405 for a small HDTV (it's perfect using component inputs). The 2005 will not work except with a HDTV pci card (for over the AIR broadcast-which is very limited and may not work at all, or a few HDVT public sttaions with cable, depending on your location, using the QAM feature if your HDTV pci card supports this)

The only difference is the extra workspace. IMO, the 2005FP is better for gaming unless you got a good system and willing to sacrifice AA/AF.

That depends. I have returned my 2405, but I found Maya very, very pleasant on it. So while 3D art apps may not be made for wide aspect purposedly, I think they definitely benefit from it. (E.g. 4 viewports + attributes panel on the right is perfectly workable). I sat 2.5-3 feet from it and didn't find it especially overwhelming (but I like to lean back, generally).


Regarding the OP's question, I personally did not find 2405 to be that cost-effective (though if I had it for $650, like someone posted, I would *definitely* keep it). I never saw 2005, but I thought 2405 ghosted quite a bit. Aside from the 4" size diff., they seem very similar. The pixel density on 2005 is a tad higher (99 dpi vs. 95 dpi or so), I am not sure if that would be noticeable in real-world use, but it may. I am actually thinking about getting a 2005 when it hits ~$380 again, I just don't feel like spending more on an LCD, and 20" should keep me afloat till SED or OLED go mass market. But if you absolutely have to have the extra 4", go for it. Your GTX should handle 19x12 res. very well, too. :)

regarding gaming, I found it to be just the right size. I.e. sitting ~3' from it, it almost fills your field of vision. Very immersive. If you are not bothered by ghosting (a lot of ppl don't see it on 2405), it's about as perfect as it gets.
 
The $650 2405 would be me.

Anyway, I would take the 2405 over the 2005 anyday since I value extra real estate and there is nothing better than running my 6800 Ultra until its balls turn blue trying to fill 1920x1200 of pure gaming goodness. The extra space is always welcome and I am much much more immersed in my games than I was before.

2405 - Samsung panel so its mva/pva?(best contrast, decent responce time, best viewing angles)
2005 - LG Philips S-IPS(better responce time,best colour reproduction and good viewing angles)

basically what do u want?
 
Well, I believe I am going to get the 2405. I got a sweet deal through a random meber of another board I go on. 625 shipped w/ insurance. Nice guy talked to him for like 4 hours.

Brand New In Box, He got a good deal on it, so he's selling it to me for the price he paid. I am also gettings a BFG GTX for 390.
