Well after reading these forums for three months now I couldn’t decide which LCD to get so I got both the 2001fp and the 172x. I am an avid gamer and play games several hours a day so ghosting was a big concern for me in this comparison. After about a week of testing both LCD’s here are my results:

172x:

When the 172x showed up at my door I thought they shipped me the wrong LCD. The box was really small. But to my surprise it was indeed the 172x. So I take it out of the box and was impressed with how small the bezel was. It came with every thing listed on the site (monitorsdirect) and there was no shipping damage.

I hooked it up via DVI and turned on the power button…… it was so bright it seems like it gave me a sunburn. Once you turn down the brightness and repair your eyes you realize just how vivid this LCD is. Out of the box the settings are the best that I have encountered. Besides the brightness, nothing else was changed in the settings.

The 172x arrived with one stuck on green pixel in the lower left hand corner and backlight leakage all along the top and bottom of the screen. So I was a bit disappointed about that because I expected high quality from Samsung. On to the gaming… the 172x is an exceptional gaming LCD. There is very little to no ghosting when playing games on this panel. Also, I did not notice any dithering, the picture was clear and vivid. I tested using Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo, Battlefield 1942, Counterstrike, Halo, and Spellforce. But beware… if you have a slower computer or a old video card then do not get this panel. When the frame rates are low (around 40 or below) the games look like the slow motion blur in Max Payne. Instead of skipping like CRT’s it blurs when the frame rate is too low. Let’s move on…..

2001fp:

I ordered the 2001fp from Dell and got the free shipping with 20% off. I did not expect this to get to me until about a week later. It arrived the next day… before I even received the tracking number it was on my doorstep. That just made my day! It came with every thing listed on the site and there was a little shipping damage.

I hooked it up via DVI and was really disappointed, the picture was not even comparable to the 172x. However, I discovered that the 2001fp has the worst out of box settings that I have seen. After about an hour of messing around with the settings I got it looking great. If you put your face up to the screen you can see the “screen door effect” however, if you view the panel from a normal distance it is not noticeable. To my surprise there is not one dead pixel on this bad boy. There is a little bit of backlight leakage but not enough to worry about. Now the gaming… I tested it with the same games as above and overall the 2001fp does have more ghosting than the 172x, but not much more.

Conclusion:

I decided to keep the 2001fp and send back the 172x. They are both great LCD’s and you can not go wrong with either one. The reason I am keeping the 2001fp… is because gaming at 1600x1200 is pure heaven. The picture looks great, it has 24 bit color, there is very little ghosting, and this is just a huge panel. Overall the 172x has a better and more vivid looking picture, virtually no ghosting, and the bezel looks great. However, it can not game in 1600x1200.

It took me along time to come down to these two LCD’s through three months of research so I hope this little comparison helps those who are looking for a great gaming LCD.
 
Pretty much my opinions on the two as well. Both had very light ghosting that won't be a problem for most people and the 172x has much better image quality. I kept the 172x since I don't game that much these days :(

nice review. I'm glad to hear that the 2001fp competes with the 172x because I haven't had personal experience with the 172x but I do have two 2001fp's.:):)

BTW...I probably would have made the same decision you did and kept the 2001fp. The 1600x1200 is wonderful.
 
hmm what about the Video Card you`re using.........

you need a lot of juice to play at 1600*1200.....

:(
 
I'm using a Radeon 9800 pro... At 1600x1200 I used the default video settings on the games and had no problem with the framerate. :)
 
I have been considering the 172x as a second monitor
 
I have only one thing to say: It's Tom's Hardware.

I have no faith in anything they do, period. Only if other websites share their opinion are they even worth glancing at.

Yeah, I read that too, but maybe it was because they had the 25ms testing screen? I can't remember weither I read that on there or not.

But there are reviews that give this screen really good marks

The Tech Zone (I haven't really read this one yet, just skipped to the conclusion and read the Pros/Cons but I think they got the 25ms manufacturing sample by mistake)

Sure there's going to be slight ghosting, you get that on every LCD, but it just depends on your personal tollerance I guess, if it's only very slight I can handle it. Now if it's blurry like a drunken experience...then there's no way.
 
Thanks for clearing that up. I play a lot of games and am thinking about going to LCD and I just don't want to get screwed.

I have kinda mixed feelings about 172x. How can I be sure that it has the correct panel? Maybe I should just buy the vp171b... Can't go wrong with that.

well you could buy it..and try it out..and if it doesn't work out for ya just send it back. That's what i'm going to do
 
Samsung has stated that ALL 172x's sent out for purchase had the 12ms panel, only a few review beta samples had a 25ms panel by mistake. Tom's reviews of monitors are horse crap. I paid alot of attention to their reviews on monitors since [H] & Anand don't do them often.

First LCD Roundup: They claim some Hyundai panel is the best thing to get. It is never released in NA.
Second LCD Roundup: They appologize for the Hyundai snafu, then proceed to give the best to buy award to a Hercules monitor. It is also never fully released in NA. Additionally they review the 172x without bothering to mention it was a beta product.
I spent MONTHS looking for the Hyundai and Hercules monitors because Tom was too lazy to find out whether the damn things were even available. His opinions are meaningless to me now.
 
Does the Magic Tune software work with both Mac and Windows? I will be using both types of OSes, and looking for a moniter that can do both. (Don't meantion Mac's ADC connection, since that isn't an issue.)
