My friend wants a new PC. and asked me to build it.

$2000 is the max budget with everything except a monitor. Can not be even a cent over. Less would be nice.

Gaming is big, but also needs to multitask real well...Will support 4 monitors...maybe 6-7 programs open at once.

What can you come up with?

Ready go!

p.s. hapy hollidays

Many apps = dual core and lots of RAM

So I would say an Asus SLI mobo, an AMD dual core proc, and 4 gb of RAM right off the bat. I have no experience with it, but someone else may be able to tell you whether SLI'd nvidia cards can output to four monitors at once when not gaming. But that can easily total $1300 alone, more if you use 6800GTs instead of 6600GTs. You would also need a very nice case (say $150), very good SLI power supply ($200; don't skimp here or it will never run right), and hard drives of a given capacity ($?) to match his desires. The DVD burner drive should be about $40 or so for an NEC. You can go in a $500 range below and above if you want, but the vid cards are holding me back: I do not know SLI capability as I said. Anyone else?

Definetly AMD Dual Core sounds like something to look out for. Prices are a little high IMHO before Xmass but if overclocking I would say get a 1.8 dual core socket 939 Opteron. If not overclocking how about that X2 4400+? Both would allow for a little OC and still do great at stock as more apps and games are becoming SMP friendly.
Two Gig of RAM is a must. Nothing fancy, just solid 2 x 1 Gb sticks with a warranty and decent timings. OCZ, Corsair, and Samsung stock I have all had good experiences with.

Get 2 hard drives, one for OS/APPS/Swapfile and the other for GAMES and music and videos of course. Keeps it a lot smoother..
Retail Heatsink is kewl, definetly ok if you are not OCing.
Enermax EG701AX-VE (W) (24P) has been a very good model for me and a few buddies as far as PSU's are concerned.
The Hyundai L90D+ has made gaming bright and easy on the eyes. 12 x 10 is the highest native resolution though. Aiming for smooth/goodlooking gameplay with a 2K budget and 16 x 12 may be a little tough. 12 x 10 is a lot easier and cheaper goal to go for.

I would recommend a 7800 GTX non sli setup. A good card from BFG or eVGA, somethingwith a warranty. Spend the biggest chunk on this, your video card.

Quality peripherals will last you through multiple upgrades. I love my MS Natural Keyboard Pro, its lasted for years, and has onboard USB ports in the back.

Hope this helps. Its all my IMVHO of course.

Phouse ;)

If he wants output to 4 monitors, put 2x 7800gt or gtx in SLI, enable SLI for gaming, and disable it when not gaming to run 2 monitors off each card.

From what i have read, i think SLI will be able to handle 4 monitors when not gaming. So it looks like the 7800gt is the top choice there.

I also thought dual core...maybe a X2 4400+.

Still need idea on a specific MB
and PS.

4 monitors? I'm assuming he does 3d design and the like. In that case, he would be better off with a Quadro or FireGL video card, as those are tailored more towards 3d applications.

PS - Enermax Liberty 500W
MB - ASUS A8N-SLI Premium

I think SLI in gaming is limited to 1 monitor, so what you need is two GPUs in non-SLI. You could have a 7800GT to run two monitors on (one of these will be your monitor you game on), and a 6200 for two more monitors (these will be your other monitors for non-gaming). You will end up with a gaming monitor on your 7800GT, and 3 non-gaming monitors (2 on 6200, 1 on 7800GT). I'll work out a setup at the egghead...hold on.

EDIT: Scratch the 6200 idea, you can easily get dual 7800GTs:

That right there is a good system, if you wanted to you could up the processor to a 4400+ and still be under your $2000 limit, but I figured 4200+ would be more than enough for your pal. Whoops, forgot to include the mouse and keyboard, but your should know enough to figure that out for yourself. You still have some $$$ leftover, so you should be able to get some good stuff.

Some real good stuff there guys. I think i shall order all soon. And the more i look at it, i think i might build nearly the same system for myself...it looks pretty nice..

I think tomshardware or anandtech do a regular build on computer systems like ie. best for 500 - 4000 bucks should check those sites out.
